Hi there, I am seriously looking to buy a Forward Look. Hoping that this forum can help out with that. I've been into these cars for a long time. I like pretty much all of the FL's, but what my most all time favorite, and what I'm after, is the 57-58 body style Plymouths. What I really want to buy is a 58 Fury, and yes I do know about them and how rare they are, but I just really like them a lot. That gold trim is beautiful! And no, I am not looking to make a Christine out of it. I like the car for what it is and the general beauty of it. I'm looking to restore one. If anybody knows of one, please let me know. Looking forward to being a welcome member on this forum, seeing others Forward Look's, and hopefully finding myself a Fury! Thank you, Jackie.

"Rare" is a relative term. Plenty of 57-58 Furys survive. They may be
pricey, compared to non-Fury models, but there is always one or five for
sale.

one or 5? There are only 1 or 2 at any given time.

There are a few dealers sitting on overpriced cars.

Here is the lowest price one and its a custom. I think the one in Germany for 90k is available also just tons of them out there.. These are rare as hens teeth...Doc just hates all Plymouths so he's trying to put
em down. Haters gonna hate...

Welcome. You have to ask yourself what you are willing and capable of doing to get one. Because of their popularity and low supply, you have to either:

1. Come up with a large wad of cash and lay it out. (This is likely the easiest approach)
2. Wait a couple of years for the right opportunity to layout a non-trivial amount of cash to purchase a total basket case and spend the next 7 years (at least) searching for parts & fixing rust etc.
3. Wait for an initially happy, but ultimately disappointing combination of 1 & 2 to come along (i.e. bondo buggy).
4. Wait an even longer unknown amount of time and devote a good portion of your efforts to find and beat everyone else at getting a gem buried by time in obscurity.
5. Beg a current owner to adopt you as a son and heir so you can inherit their car when they pass on.
6. Decide to purchase a lesser, more obtainable model that may be just as good for you.
7. Decide to purchase a little less expensive Savoy 2dr. hardtop and attempt to make a Fury clone out of it.
8. Devote all your efforts to learning the mechanics of space-time distortion within quantum gravitation so that you can build a time machine and go get the new one that you deserve. Take that, causality!

So which one are you planning to execute?

Hey, Mike .... I am restoring a 58 Plymouth remember ? This has nothing
do with hate. Lose the stupid commentary.

This is about a car that at any time, one can simply look and there are some
being offered. Try doing that with a 58 Fireflite or Adventurer coupe or convertible,
or a 57 Transcontinental, or a 61 Country Squire, or .... Cars like these, you
could stand out there waving 100K around for years and there simply are no
cars out there to spend it on. Let's see you drum up another 58 Plaza 4s in
Mist Green. It only took me 30 years to find that one. Neither of those Furys

The '58 fury was my dream car since Christine came out and it still is. I hope some day to have 1 I know dreams are cheap but in reality they are not. Good luck with you search but with mine it must have the factory engine and transmission but if they had been overhauled thats ok but if its been swapped and another engine put in its place then not for me

58 Fury Not the rarest Forward look car, but Probably the most wanted and highly sought after Forward look car .

If I were to stock my car lot with any Forward Look car, with the
idea of making the most money (most buyers, highest price potential),
it would be 59 Dodge Custom Royal convertibles. I think there are
more people lusting for that FL car than any other, and prices are 3x
what any Fury will bring.

In that case he should probably start looking for a DeLorean instead of a Plymouth! Seriously though, Nathan basically covered just about every option there is for you.

How much are you willing to spend in time and money? How nice do you want the car to be when it's all said and done (i.e. concours level, driver, etc)? If all you're looking for is a nice driver, a finished clone would probably be your best bet. You could build the clone yourself, but finding all the trim and Fury specific parts can be a real pain in the rear considering how desirable Furys are.

personally, i'd never buy ANY car with the upfront intent on making money from its sale...

but IF i did, it would be a '58 Fury *BECAUSE* of the "d@mn" movie Christine...
or a '77 Trans Am because of Smokey and the Bandit...
or a '82 Trans Am because of Knight Rider...
or a '69 Charger because of Daisy Duke and her legs that go all the way up...
or a '81 DeLorean because of Back to the Future...
or a '59 Cadillac because of Ghostbusters...
or a '63 Beetle because of The Love Bug...
et cetera...

GRautogallery of Traverse city Michigan Currently has a 1958 Plymouth for sale the price is $49,900 .Interestingly according to the Description this was at one time painted like a Christine clone red and white and the current owner turned it back into a 1958 Fury with correct colors .Thats a nice change .

I don't get you Doc. In the same post you claim that Fury's are not rare (and I recall you saying the same about Chrysler 300s), but then you go on to claim that your Plymouth Plaza sedan IS rare?! Plymouth Plazas are the definition of NOT rare, they made almost 100,000 Plaza 4 door sedans in 1958. Your Plaza may have a rare combination of options, but that does not make your car rare. I guess my 1960 Plymouth 2 door sedan is rare because it is the only 1 with a 4 on the floor...

Jon, don't look at the productions numbers, the survival rate of 4dr is very low if you compare it with 300 for example..Ask me how I know...

I find the survival rate of 4 door sedans very high...maybe the highest. I've owned many of them. But only a few 2dr sedans, fewer wagons, and even fewer 4dr hardtops...and the fewest 2dr hardtops. I've never had a convertible. Also one mainly finds 4dr sedans in junkyards. (But if by survival rate you mean how long it will survive in today's world? Yes a 4dr is less likely to survive than a 2dr because someone will use it for parts to fix a 2dr.)

Prices seem to follow that trend too...with the exception of wagons...once they were worse than 4dr sedans...now they are "cool" and can bring a premium.

Restored cars probably follow the opposite trend. Convertibles and 2dr hardtops win out. You're more likely to see one of those at a show than a sedan because most won't be bothered by restoring a lowly "parts car for a 2dr" sedan.

I love sedans...send them all my way!

Jon,

I think I was pretty clear .... if a person wanted a Fury or a 300, at any time
there are some available to shop because they were special cars to begin with,
and a high percentage were saved, and that same high percentage are all over
the market because people still like them.

Comparatively, some cars, like my DeSoto, are also in high demand, but were
not saved in the original 10-15 year-old car crush out and are truly rare. Just
compare the known numbers or production and confirmed survivors of say 300D
convertibles vs. 58 Furys vs. 58 Fireflite convertibles. Some cars survived in
much higher percentages than others.

On the flip side, of the 45,000 Plaza four door sedans, an extremely high percentage
of those were scrapped and doing the same math, are quite under-represented
(based on production numbers) if looking for one today.

Go to shows, look through for sale advertising. You are far more likely to see
a Fury or a 300 on display or for sale somewhere than any other single model.

your equating "options"... like "Air conditioning" and paint?... as a car? I have heard way to many guys at car shows go... This is one of 10000 with blue paint! its super rare! they only made 400,000 but the blue was rare for a mustang that year! sigh... Start with a rare car then talk about a certain color and then I'm impressed. Options don't count as makes and models/trims... if 4 door Plymouths were worth anything there would be hundreds for sale... There are tons still for sale, many people gave up trying to sell them and yes they just scrap them for parts. I think a perfect 4 door sedan factory stock car can be cool from a historical aspect but its not a desirable car that's why they aren't for sale all over the place and no one protects them.

A Fury I'm more of the less looking for is a resto project one. I don't mind if its running or not, or even has a motor/tranny, as I planned to put my own motor/tranny setup in there anyhow. Hopefully can find one cheaper that way too. I'm just concerned with getting one that is mostly complete regarding all the trim pieces, etc.

Jackie,

You may have to wait awhile. Although finished Fury's pop up for sale here and there, I think it's even more rare for a project Fury to turn up.

last project fury sold for like 10k? and only a couple have shown up this year. You could wait for a year, I would go for any two door hardtop. Also it depends on how good of project you want. maybe talk to John M?

this is the craigslist sweep and some parts,  THAT 2 door is a hack jobbed 4 door.  Its really your only option now. I cant find any two door hardtop projects out there right now.

That 2 door hack job is a really good price now, it comes with fiberglass bumper wings and sport tone trim I think?  thats like 2000$ right there.  Get a 2 door title.

chitLOADS of 4 door cars...  for parts and stuff, some are even nice.

Thanks. I'm fine with waiting for the right car/right price to come along. I've seen that hacked up car has been for sale for quite some time. I'm not into Frankenstein cars...

it sounds like maybe this is the type of car you are looking for?

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=43898&posts=3&start=1

this was a car for sale in the Denver area about five years ago.  long since sold away to who knows where, but it represents the condition and price range, right?

just by the rate of inflation, the 2012 price is about $16,000 in 2017 dollars, but I bet a similar car would be more than that now.

I think you can find 1958 Plymouth Furys for sale, but finding a specific condition can be difficult.

what really throws a wrench into things is you might find the right car in the right condition, but it may be thousands of miles away, which may be a deal-breaker in that price range.

Seriously, you will be waiting for years if not forever. If you see a nice 57-58 two door hardtop project show up, I suggest you buy it if you are serious.

I've been here for 3-4 years and there was 1 57 Fury in worse shape show up? and it was questionable, I think it was for sale for some time and came with a 4 door donor?

I think it wasn't selling but did just recently. That is the ONLY 57-58 fury 'project' i've seen show up, everything else is 50k+

The problem with Looking for a 58 Fury ,a lot of the people that are Interested in these are not even into Forwardlook cars but because of Christine clones you have to compete with them also .These people wouldn't give a Chrysler ,Dodge or Desoto a second Look .If you can find a Decent mostly complete car I wouldn't wait to along Buying one ,missing parts are another problem .

The last three posts are all excellent advice. Have your money gun loaded,
sighted in, and ready to pull the trigger the moment a target appears. When
you are looking for a specific car, and only that car will do, hesitating will
pretty much guarantee someone else will grab it up.

it sounds like maybe this is the type of car you are looking for?

this was a car for sale in the Denver area about five years ago.  long since sold away to who knows where, but it represents the condition and price range, right?

just by the rate of inflation, the 2012 price is about $16,000 in 2017 dollars, but I bet a similar car would be more than that now.

I think you can find 1958 Plymouth Furys for sale, but finding a specific condition can be difficult.

what really throws a wrench into things is you might find the right car in the right condition, but it may be thousands of miles away, which may be a deal-breaker in that price range.

Yes, that is what I'm looking for. Hopefully one will turn up soon.

something will turn up!

there was a site member who was looking for a very rare car several years ago. he really beat the bushes for a year or more straight. folks said "good luck, buddy."
wouldn't you know he found and bought three or four of those unicorns! if he could do it with unicorns, you can certainly find a four-leaf clover.

...you should join the Plymouth Owners Club and start shaking those trees.

Watch out for mice in the engine bay. I think they've been nibbling on the air cleaner.
