Extreme Veteran Posts: 504 | Has anyone tried to duplicate (or come close) the factory gold (anodized at the factory) look by Powdercoating 57 Desoto Adventurer Hubcaps? I wanted to gold anodize them, but due to the stainless inner attached to the aluminum outer dissimilar metals it is impossible without un crimping the hubcap. I have found a very close paint, but I hesitate to go that route. (3554266396_7c236810be_z.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 3554266396_7c236810be_z.jpg (127KB - 105 downloads)

You may need to blend a translucent gold with a silver metallic base to get a consistent finish. I think it will take some experimentation to hit on a formula, but it might be worth trying. Powder coat is relatively inexpensive. https://www.prismaticpowders.com/colors/P-5139S/TRANSPARENT-GOLD-ITE... Elite Veteran Posts: 1140 Location: Blackpool, United Kingdom. | You would need to do a test on a old one, a alloy wheel is a lot thicker than these covers , the heat of baking the powder may damage the cover ? What about vacuum deposit coating, like they do on plastic parts ? Edited by springsweptwing 2017-10-31 3:08 PM

Expert Posts: 3966 Location: DFW, TX | Aluminum melts around 1200* F, I don't think any powder coat ovens get close to that kind of heat. Maybe half that. Ceramic coating is a different story altogether. It is made for high temp industrial work.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1140 Location: Blackpool, United Kingdom. | Not saying they will melt, powder coating oven around 400 f , if they have been repaired they may go out of shape, they are not the strongest of covers, I have around 10 of them and all are bent. That's why I say test one before diving in and ruining a full set.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 6487 Location: Newark, Texas (Fort Worth) | Can aluminum be plated with gold? The aluminum can be zincated, then copper plated, then gold plated. Although gold and copper will interdiffuse at high temperature over time, if the part is not hot the plating should meet your needs. Good luck. A. High phosphorus electroless nickel deposits are non-magnetic unless heated to over 250 °C.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 504 | Thanks very much for the valuable advice! I have straightened and polished my Hub Caps, so maybe a translucent powder coat would be worth a try. I will need a sample part for tryout...I have a hopelessly bent hub cap that may work for that. It looks a little naked with no caps...I can't wait to get this project completed!
