Subject: American or Canadian? 57 Windsor

Can anyone help me determine if this is a Canadian or American Windsor and just more info in general? VIN is W5744017. The 'BODY' number is 44276. Thanks

Location: Pieksamaki, Finland, Europe		American Windsor = American Windsor moldings & American Windsor two-tone paint scheme, American Windsor interiors (trim 55 was available only on Windsor, mine has the same)
Canadian Windsor = American Saratoga moldings & American Saratoga two-tone paint scheme, different interiors from both American Windsors and Saratogas

To me that looks like American Windsor data plate + VIN code has so high number that I doubt so many were made in Canada.

What makes you suspicious whether it's American or Canadian?

It appears to be American built according to the parts book (WM4402 issued Feb 1958) the VIN , W57-1001, is shown as the starting serial number for Detroit. Also I've only seen that particular style of Body code plate used on American built cars.

It has the full length chrome trim like a Saratoga, not the shorter trim that Windsors have. See pic. What does the Canadian interior look like versus the American interior? I couldn't find any good picture online of a Canadian interior.

Location: So. Cal		grunau, what does a typical Canadian body plate look like? Another odd thing about this one is the 55 interior trim code with a turquoise (W) roof and white body. That's a really odd combo if the codes mean the same as the US version.

Location: Vancouver, BC		The Canadian body tag with model, body number, trim code and paint code was used from 1935 through to 1965. Attached is a photo of the 1965 version.

As for the 1957 Windsor, the exterior trim is the same as the US Saratoga. Same model number, too - C75-2. The only difference on the outside between the two is the nameplate - Windsor instead of Saratoga.

For 1958 the Canadian Windsor was again based on the US Saratoga and thus on the longer 126" wheelbase. The 1958 US Windsor shared bodies doors with the Firesweep.

Canadian trim codes and paint codes differed from the US models through to the early 1960's.

Production of the Canadian 1957 C75-2 Windsor came to 4,586 units - all sedans and hardtops. No wagons.

Serial numbers for the 1957 Chrysler Windsor -

C75-1 :
Detroit - W57-1001 to W57-44450
LosAngeles - W57L-1001 to W57L-5120

C75-2 :
Windsor - 99,728,401 to 99,732,986

Actually I have seen several US made Windsors with full lenght chrome trim on the side. They appear even in some sales literature. It's always possible that people have installed Saratoga trim afterwards but your car must be 6th or 7th I've seen so far and I doubt they could all be home made conversions. Maybe there was some special package for more side trim available?

I think Canadian Windsors had the Windsor script on the front fender while on American Windsors had it on the rear quarter.

Yes, the Canadian Windsor was a Saratoga with Windsor nameplates. So, when looking at an American 1957 or 1958 Saratoga, simply replace the "Saratoga" nameplate with "Windsor" and you have a Canadian 1957 or 1958 Windsor.
