Expert Posts: 3776 Location: NorCal | 4006730 - 318 - 7 4006730 is the common casting number for the '75-'79 318. The -7 is a foundry index number for the casting mold. 5M318 - 12181919 5= 1975 M= Marysville engine plant 318= Displacement 1218= Casting date but this decodes to November 27, 1964. Check it again. 1919= Sequence number, the 1919th built that day.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1102 Location: Hayward, Calif | I rechecked that serial # with a bright lite and a magnifying glass and still come up with 12181919. I'm guessing this eng. could have been put in almost anything Chry built in 1975. At least now I have an idea of what I'm working with. Thanks for the info, appreciate it !! BTW, will the 360 heads & intake manifold work on that 318 ? Thanks Again, Jerry

Thanks, Jerry 5M318 - 12181919 - This was stamped on the block just below the head on the front of the left side of the block? It's usually blocked off by the power steering. 5M318 - 12181919 5 - 1975 model year. (Engineering department code was "L") M - Engine Plant - Mound Road (This plant built A and LA engines for years) 318 - Engine size - 318 1218 - Date engine assembled - 12 - December, 18 - 18th day (December 18, 1974) Chrysler apparently did not use the 10,000 day calendar for the 1975 model year. 1919 - 1,919th engine built on 1218. If you want to know what assembly plant the engine was shipped to and what car line it was installed in, there should be an eight digit number stamped on the right side of the block just to the rear of the engine mount. Should begin with "5". I know 360 intake manifolds will work on a 318, not sure about the heads. Edited by Chrycoman 2018-01-19 5:36 AM

As far as 360 heads go, there are multiple types. All will bolt up, a few will improve performance, most will just burn more fuel. Same is true for the intake.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9663 Location: So. Cal | You should check the combustion chamber sizes on those heads. Compression ratio on those '70-'80's motors is the biggest problem. I have a set of rebuilt "302" casting swirl port heads for a 318 if you are interested. You would probably need to pick them up near Los Angeles though because shipping wouldn't be worth doing.

Expert Posts: 1740 Location: Alaska | The 360 heads have larger ports and valves than the 318, also a larger combustion chamber. You can bolt the 360 manifold onto the 318 but you will have a mismatch in the ports although it will seal and run. (I have done this) You can bolt the 360 heads and manifolds onto the 318 and get better flow because of the larger ports and valves but you will lower the compression ratio unless you change pistons and these will have to be aftermarket to raise compression. Hope this is clear.
