Location: The Mile High City | Today, John Quinn called me and sent me these images of his newly-acquired 1958 Plymouth Plaza club coupe. He told me a couple of ladies in Boulder had this gem stored in their garage since 1987. John's story was that the husband (now deceased) of one of the ladies put it in storage when his daughter put a dent in the hood using it as her daily driver in high school. What a cool car! Notice it still has (at least a portion) of the original rubber floor mats! John said the husband had the seats redone. The front seat has a stain from someone sitting on it with greasy overalls, the back seat is perfect. He and Ricky went to pick it up and Ricky is going to rebuild the little two-barrel carb. Very cool! This one just kind of fell in John's lap and he couldn't say no. The dealer emblem on the trunk says A. B. Poe Motor Co. - El Paso. John said the car originally came from nice, dry Texas! Solid as a rock. I can't wait to see it in person. Location: The Mile High City | The only options I can see on this base model, inexpensive body style (one step up from the Business Coupe) Plymouth are a heater and Solex glass. This one is real "bare bones"! Super cool!

Location: The Mile High City | Oh, I think Ricky might have nailed it! Man, that car is so bare I am surprised it came with windshield wipers! It doesn't even have the chrome horn ring. Doc, I wonder if this is the type of car that would have come with those painted steel hub caps? John told me he was going to look for a new hood and fender for it. I would be tempted to pound the dents out as best as could and leave it original. Unfortunately, those grille pieces cannot be easily massaged to a good state! Get it running, clean it up - paint the engine silver again and call it done. Maybe replace those tail light assemblies.

Location: Parts Unknown | Note that the car DOES have side trim and the really basic fender ornaments, so someone stepped up for those. It got a heater. Does it have a music box ? ... I cannot make it out. Mine is music box delete and largely devoid of any superfluous equip- ment. But the buyer went all-out on the driver comfort stuff, optioning on V-8, Torqueflite, power steering and brakes, and dealer installed A/C. While only a build sheet could tell us if it got blackwalls, if memory serves, the original dog dishies were still with the car (I don't remember hunting those down, and no full wheelcovers were present when I got the car). It is a pretty weird build. I wonder why the buyer did not (or get talked in to) stepping up to a Savoy or Belvedere, given the way it is equipped ? The only logical explanation is that the buyer was one of those personality types that disdained flashy stuff. Frugal people who survived the Depression and had a deep seated sense of "sensibility" versus embarrassing showiness. They were common when I was a kid. Buyers of all those legions of el cheapo Studebakers, Ramblers, and other similar basic cars. That whole generation died off, and with them went that ultra frugal way of presenting themselves. Today, everyone wants to be a "rock star" (by comparison). I thought we determined those painted steel hubcaps were used on trucks (?) Out of curiosity, does Quinn's car have white painted wheels, or Argent Silver ? It seems most got a "standard" Argent, but it seems some got matching body color on the dog-dish equipped wheels. I am going to go with body color, just because I like the look and think it looks a little less flashy than silver wheels. My objective has always been a maximum stripper presentation, even if this car did get some hefty "hidden" upgrades. It will look like a real stripper, but I get to enjoy NOT shifting on the column, power steering, etc. The gold "V" will really stand out against that all green body color. What is the fascination with coming up with a name for his car ???

Location: The Mile High City | Doctor DeSoto - 2018-01-28 10:48 PM I thought we determined those painted steel hubcaps were used on trucks (?) Hmmm! The one I sent you was definitely a '57 - '58 style hubcap. I didn't think Plymouth made trucks in the late 1950's! It came from Speedway Auto Salvage and was in (not on) a 1957 Plymouth. I assumed it was a variant one step below the super fancy stainless hubcaps! Did they make a "no trim at all" Plymouth in 1958? John's 1959 Plymouth convertible is named Frau Blue Car (listen to attachment) This one's gotta have a name! I need to see John's car in person to find out about some of those details, but I see neither radio nor antenna. Attachments ---------------- horse-neigh2.wav (38KB - 330 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9648 Location: So. Cal | Young Frankenstein is a great movie. I agree with Doc, that they are most likely from a truck. Dodge used steel caps on their trucks, probably to save from using more expensive stainless. Dodge trucks were the cheapest made units of all the trucks because the marketed them to the poor farmers. That's one of the reasons they didn't get a decent power steering gear for them until 1972! Most '57 trucks that I have seen use steel versions of the '56 Plymouth hubcap. But I can totally see them switching to '57 Plymouth caps late in the year, once they ran out of the '56 versions and didn't want to make another run of them. They used whatever was cheap for them at the time. So just because it is a Plymouth cap doesn't mean that it wouldn't be used on a Dodge truck. Elite Veteran Posts: 1107 Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | Greetings! it has been a long time since I have been on the Forum. The car is an radio delete car and I plan on keeping it that way with any tunes being installed under dash or in the glove box. Mikes' story on it was 99% right, but it was the girls father who fixed it up and did the interior. It has a 3 on the tree which is cool. I plan on cleaning out the gas tank, cooling system, new oil etc. And then after that I will see if she fires up for me. John

Location: Parts Unknown | Both Plymouth and Dodge offered "fleet" model cars that were not part of the normal dealer roster of offerings. Police and municipal fleets, U.S. Forest Service, Insurance companies, ... lots of these cars were built and sold. I recently sold a 1966 Coronet police car that was totally off the radar for any dealer lit. That year they offered the Coronet as in "DeLuxe", "440", "500" trim levels. Even the lowly "DeLuxe" had a short rub bar of side trim and other bits around the tail lights that this cop car did not. I have seen 58 Plazas with no side trim or fender ornaments. Unsure if these were old muni-bought fleet models or not, but to answer your question, yes, Plymouth sold no-trim versions of the Plaza in 1958. My car will be finished with no side trim or fender ornaments, no exterior mirrors, and being radio delete, no antennas. If I could find lit detailing how painted hubcaps were used, I would go that route too. I want a bare bones street appearance ... the Anti-Christine, if you will. Right down to the Buzzard Puke Green paint !
