I am consolidating info on the "702" heater system used in the 55-56 Plymouths, Dodges, Desoto and some(?) Chryslers

The main components include the heater core (PN 1605 274), the heater valve (PN 1688 946) and the valve to heater "U" hose (PN 1605 532) as labeled in the diagram below.

Heater Core - PN 1605 274 :

I have no idea about a current source for the heater core. I assume that a good radiator shop could build a new one, i.e. replace the core. No idea about cost.

Heater Valve - PN 1688 946

The heater valve might be available in the aftermarket. Nathan (PowerFlite) suggested that there was a NAPA repair kit. Not sure about the details on that one.

One aftermarket heater valve:

Regarding the heater valve to heater core "U" hose, Terrance (71Charger_fan) suggested: "I found a curved heater hose (Gates 18701/NAPA NBH 10701) that, with trimming, made a decent stand in for my original looped hose from the heater control valve to the heater core."

Previously, 57Chizler suggested that a Dayco 86050 works for the U-hose replacement:

If anyone can fill in some of the blanks, please reply to this post.

For fun I checked my local "FLAPS" (friendly local auto parts store) ("LORDCO" in my case - think O'Reillys) for the Dayco 86050. They didn't have that but they said it crossed to an AC Delco and they had one in the store. So I ran some errands and picked it up on the way home. An AC Delco 14075S. Cost me just over CND$15 with taxes.

I came home and tried the hose against the existing bulging hose (yeech) and it looks like it will fit fine with maybe a bit of trimming. Then I came in the house and put AC Delco 14075S in to Google and got several hits. One was Rock Auto. At Rock Auto the hose shows as CDN$7.72 but with shipping to my home, it would add CDN$7.53 for a total of CDN$15.25 with delivery by March 5. Shipping to my US mail box would be cheaper (CDN$3.76) and faster (Feb.23) but the mail box company would charge me US$4 per item and I'd be back at $15 plus. So picking it up today wasn't a bad idea. Good to know that Rock Auto might have been a good option though.

I forgot to mention that I also checked with my closest NAPA for that NAPA hose. It was going to be about CDN$15 plus taxes to I figured that I would try the AC Delco since nobody seems have posted about it. I think the hoses are all made by the same people. The markings on the side of the AC Delco hose are the same type as the GATES rad hose(s) that I bought.

I am leaving out the door to go on vacation so I don't have a lot of time, but do a search on this Forwardlook site and you will find instructions on how to rebuild the heater valve with new seals using the kit from Napa.

Thanks for that Nathan. Have a good trip.

I did a Forum Search on "rebuilding heater valve" and a few threads came up. This one (below) was the "best" but even it didn't have details about which NAPA part people were trying to use.

This thread: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=41712&...

However, there was a link in that thread to JCAuto that contained a link to a Ranco part: Ranco 1605280 (supposedly equivalent to the 1688 946) and that lead to a link to Detroit Muscle and a 1" seal (which might be the ticket(??)):

https://www.detroitmuscletechnologies.com/ranco-water-valve-repair-s...

"DMT brand new water valve stem top seal repair kit. This is a brand new, high quality part. Correct material. Soft, pliable, stainless wire crimp ring. The seals sold by the big box auto parts stores / chains are THICK and hard.
The larger seal is 1.000" in diameter. This fits almost every make and model Ranco valve including part number on your water valve matches the part numbers in the list below." (List includes the 1688 946)

You could just look for it using your make & year on NAPA. If you do, you will find BK 6601000 for $10. I'm not sure about his claim as to using their version vs. the NAPA version.
