I am in the process of getting my 1958 Fury Golden Commando road worthy. When I took the rear brakes apart I found that the axle seals had been leaking all over the brakes. I have disassembled the brakes and pulled the axles. There was an axle seal on the backing plate to keep the gear oil out of the brakes. Once I pulled the axle I found a second axle seal on the inside of the housing. My question is, is this rear axle bearing a wet bearing that uses the gear oil from the rearend or is it a packed bearing that would need to be packed with bearing grease prior to installation. When I took it out it did not have any heavy grease and appeard to have gear oil on it. I just dont see how it would oil with a seal on the inside of the bearing. Any info would be appriciated. Thank you.

Welcome to the board.

The axle bearings are packed with bearing grease, the inner seal in the housing prevents gear oil from entering the bearing cavity and the seal in the backing plate prevents the grease from entering the brake area.

Thank you so much for the info. I figured that was the case since there was 2 seals. I am guessing it was leaking for a while since there was no trace of bearing grease, just gear oil. Thank you.

interestingly the FSM calls for oiling them (iirc) with a heavy oil! i use grease anyway, even added a grease nipple.

Surprisingly, the early FSM's make little/no mention of rear axle bearings other than to advise that no periodic lubrication is required and, if the bearings are replaced, they should be repacked. Kinda hard to "pack" oil.
