I have ran into both styles of freeze plugs in the 2206324 heads. Disc and cups. Does anyone have any ideas on how unusual the cups are? I have 4 heads, one with the cup.
The part numbers have a dash with another number. You would think the higher number was the new head with the cup but that isnt the case.

Your heads originally used the disc plugs, the cup plug is a repair plug and requires a machining process to install. This is what the original should look like.

From what i remember, the cup had more meat in it than the disc head. I will have to double check next time i am at the machine shop

Hey Bill,

if you are not aware, you need to be pretty specific with the install on the concave freeze plugs. Plenty of good info on this site, yell out if you need direction. On my own 60 Imperial I had one blow out (I did not know it happened!) and almost cooked my re-built engine.

yell out if you need help.

There is a way of eliminating this style plug (without machining the block/head) and eliminate a lot of the risk with type (plug blowing out) of failure.

Steve.

Hi Steve
I think i saved some info off here on the disc install. My engine guy has been in business like 40 years and when he saw the one head with the cups, hoped i could run across another one. He isnt real fond of the discs. I accidentally ended up with the cup head.

If a machinist goes to the trouble to dial in a mill to cut for the cup plug... once clean he could pipe thread cut the opening and install a screw in plug never to blow out or need repair again.

I was at the engine shop today and the cup plug head hole is actually smaller than the disc hole so theres no way the disc head was cut for the cups.

Core plug/freeze plugs are made in too many sizes to count and from a variety of materials. Here is a reference for those folks in need:
