yeah ill be going this fall, I hope they have all the same cars.

I'm sure the dummies were like "hey we have to store these cars somewhere"... "hey why not open a museum?"...

its not like you could destroy these cars, you could move them south so you don't have to heat them over the winter but that would probably cost more than running the museum for a decade.

"The collection will not be open to the public, at least initially, but the company is considering that possibility."

So they are buying a storage space, not a museum. If the public can't see and enjoy them they might as well not exist.

Good news, potentially, but you'd think they, of all people would know a Challenger from a Charger!
Or maybe it was the Freeps reporter.

It’s a great start! Glad they are bringing some kind of collection back under one roof. Yes, it would be better to have it public, but obviously that requires a lot of cost and a ton of man hours.

It’s sad that there is no true museum for these cars. Just personal collections here and there. I had looked for a museum to donate (no charge) a historically significant Chrysler related vehicle to, but sadly I couldn’t find one that cared about history... just collecting cars. I gave up and sold it into a private collection.

GM has an amazing collection. Chrysler has a good start, but really should build up truly significant cars, not just restored every-day production cars. I would sign up to donate cars to such a place if it had long term prospects of maintaining the collection.

This is potentially good news as Chrysler has made some wonderful cars that ought to be preserved. I don't know what killed the original Walter P. Chrysler museum; money woes probably and not enough visitors to justify the expense of keeping it open. Let's hope the management can find a winning formula to keep this mueum open and running.

I had the rare chance to visit the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in 2014 when the WPC Club had its national convention there. What a great place that was, but even then the museum was closed to the general public. The staff agreed to open the museum for a visit by the WPC membership for the day, and it was an Aladdin's Cave of Wonders with many uniquue vehicles.I'm glad I went.

Here are a few shots I took on that day.

What would be really cool is if they could set up a dealer showroom showing cars from 50 years ago. They could display original brochures, free-standing displays, maybe even the vintage desks that salespeople of the era would use. Similar to what they did at Chryslers at Carlisle up until recently, only more focused on the 50th (or 60th or 70th) anniversary year.

that's a lot of money, looks like it will just be a plain warehouse deal but being able to get is great. I will make it up this year.

This has to be heated and cleaned is all probably. Not alot of people going here.

Remember Ford museum is the big deal and has many of the standard cars. I think they even have a turbine car themselves.

Great photos! Thanks for sharing! This is a great step in a good direction. You are right Mike... The Henry Ford is awesome!

GM was lucky with their collection.  Harley Earl's grandson told me that in the very early 1980's GM executives tried to sell off Harley Earl's Y-Job and Lesabre which were crated for decades and that when top management requested to pull them from storage, they had been transfered and reported to be lost.  It was said to have bought enough time until they were appreciated again by management.  AMC actually had an awesome historical collection for many years, but that went away too.

The Turbine Car is my favorite. So much so, that if I could have just one car in the world, this would be it. I have a collection of models of these and one company even made a convertible of which I have. The first one I ever had was a 1:24 or 1:25 scale that I built from a kit with about 1000 pcs. - seemed like it anyway. Turned out just about perfect then my one and two year olds at the time got a hold of it and that was the end. I bought two more of the kits but never built either one.

The former Viper - Prowler assembly plant formerly was a Champion spark plug factory. It is a cool older building with an end grain wood floor in much of it, and lots of space. It is in an obscure area of Detroit just south of 8- Mile Road; it was almost impossible to find on your first trip in a pre-Google maps era. I would not be surprised if it was open for special events, car shows and the like.
I was a docent volunteer at the old Chrysler Museum. Unfortunately, I could often do an entire four hour shift without a single visitor, and many who did visit were killing time between meetings somewhere else at the Tech Center.
BTW, a lot of the old AMC historic collection made it's way to the Chrysler collection.

What has happened to the historical archives? Seems all the old links to their web site no longer work. Can you still get build records?

I got to go to the old museum on a work project as they hosted the event dinner there and got to roam around it for many hours, including the basement collection. Also got to visit many parts of the headquarters building and engineering areas. This was after Daimler bought them and there was a lot of grumbling over cuts to development and engineering. Also went to one of the GMs old showcase factories for a talk on the Volt and another on tire pressure monitoring but that facility seemed to be quite run down. This was right before the crash.

They don't do decoding anymore. They return your check but tell you the original selling dealer and a copy of the build record. Its up to you now to decode.

Too bad about the lack of support from the FCA people nowadays.
On January 17, 2017, they sent me not only a copy of the build record for my '65 Sport Fury, but a cover letter for it and a very impressive "Production Record Prepared for:" that listed every option including:
"Engine 80 = 426 Cu. In. 8 Cyl. 4 Bbl"
"Transmission 3 = Manual 4 Speed"
and shipping date, dealer, color, etc., even "Axle Ratio 3 = 3.23."
However, at least what they're giving now is better than what I can get from GM on my '65 Corvette: Nada! All their records were destroyed long ago.
