Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | Hi all, I've been trying to decipher my ID tag for a while now. The shop manual has been a big help but it's lacking in some areas. I've been reading other posts and threads here in the hopes that I can get a handle on how it's done. So far all I've been able to establish is that it's a Robin's egg blue 4dr Belvedere. I don't know what the other bunch of numbers mean or their position on the tag. And I'll be dipped in 90 weight if I could figure out how you can tell the exact build date !!! It would be much appreciated if someone could tell me more about my car than I know myself.

If the Tag has the "word" SCHED (as in scheduled build date), the numbers underneath provide the clue. In the case of my 56 Dodge SCHED (in the lower left of the tag) was 0515, i.e. May 15th (1956 is implied) Edited by 56D500boy 2018-03-30 2:09 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9855 Location: Lower Mainland BC | The image of the tag came through. Looks like your car was scheduled for a April 13, 1961 build date. Robins egg blue is CC-1 so I think they screwed up and the Trim is 511.

Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | Hey 56D500boy, that's a great picture of the colors. I get the "0413" and it was the 283rd car build that month, right? I think the "323" signifies 4dr. I see how the paint and trim codes are reversed. Does the "511" have a particular designation? what do the other numbers signify if anything ?

I am only "good" on the paint codes (and I am not that good on them). We need Chrycoman. Somebody turn on the Bat Signal!!! I did a search in the VIN tag sub-forum and found a few 1961 Plymouth hits: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/search/query.asp?fid=55&action=se... Including this build sheet that was found under the rear seat of a 61.

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | The 0283 means it the car was the 283rd vehicle scheduled to be built on April 13, 1961. 323 : 3 - Plymouth V8 2 - Belvedere 3 - 4dr Sedan The Trim code of 511 is for blue cloth and viinyl upholstery in a 1961 Plymouth Belvedere. As the Trim and Paint info has been swapped on the tag, I am assuming it was built at the Lynch Road plant in Detroit. The beginning digits of the VIN should start with 3211. The remaining six digits are for the sequential production number for the Lynch Road plant which began at 100001. The "A" is for the engine, and I believe "1" is for code 351 - Dual exhaust. No entry for the "A" would mean the car came with just a 318 V8 B - Transmission - 282 - Powerflite The rest I am not sure exactly what they are for, although I believe H is for 315 - Heater with defroster The following are possible matches for K, W, Y and Z. The last digit of the sales code is what was entered on the tag. 292 - Power Brakes 372 - Back up lights 382 - Mirror - Outside Left, Manual 512 - Variable speed windshield wipers 383 - Mirror - Outside Left, Remote 513 - Variable speed windshield wipers and windshield washer 413 - Stone Shields 374 - Light - Parking Brake There were two radios that fall into this list - 422 - Golden Tune 423 - Golden Touch Tuner There may be more options on your car than I have listed. There were Accessory Groups that combined various options. The Accessory Group would have been entered on the tag, but not the options within the group. The base radio, code 421, is one option that was available in an Accessory Group. If you ever take the seats out, you might find a broadcast sheet wrapped in the springs. The sheet was placed there when the seats were made to identify which car they were to installed in. And they're not easy to remove.

Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | wow !! Chrycoman... you are the numbers guy !! Between 56D500boy and you, my data plate makes much more sense. This is my first FL car and I'm really enjoying the history of these cars as well as my own. the journey so far has been fun. As far as the broadcast sheet, it was the first thing I went after when I gutted the interior. Alas, the mice and other devil rodents used it for housing as well as the burlap and stuffing. Thanks to all you guys for the great info.

Not that I need to state this but.... Chrycoman is *THE* numbers man. I only know a few things and most of those are regarding 56 Dodges. Beyond that, I am just making wild @ss guesses or finding info in old posts. Sometimes I get lucky. Edited by 56D500boy 2018-03-31 9:08 PM
