I was playing around the rad support and the headlight and park/signal light wiring. I don't like the look of the grommets. I would like to replace them. OE seems to be metal (??). I would do rubber if I could find them.

Looks like Hillman brand at Lowes should have something:

Looks like Hillman brand at Lowes should have something:

Well I see neither of the links that I found yesterday work today. Despite that I went out to Lowes after Easter Brunch (Thai food ) and bought what I thought would work: Hillman 881262 1.125" OD x 23/32" ID x 5/16"5/16" (thick) grommets (2 for starters). Removed the old crusty grommet in the rad support where the wires for the right headlight and right park/signal light are fed through from the engine bay side of the rad support. As I did so, I discovered that the "grommet" was not rubber but metal that has been painted and/or perhaps rubber coated back in the day. Now I understand why it was crusty and rusty - its metal not rubber.

There are two lugs on this metal grommet on the hidden side that you could likely squeeze them to release the metal grommet from the hole. By the time I discovered the lugs, I had mangled the metal grommet beyond all salvation so I just cut it with side cutters. It was going anyway.

Since this was just a trial and I was lazy and didn't want to open a can of worms, I didn't disconnect the wires at the termination block, I just cut the Hillman rubber grommet and slipped it over the wires and into the groove. The fit was a little loose, like it was one size too small but I can't find the next size up, i.e. 1.25" OD and ??? ID. Regardless, the 881262 would work. I would just seal it into the hole and where I cut it with black silicone sealant. All would be good.

The weird thing is Lowes' website claims to not know anything about them: "Sorry No Results for ''Hillman Rubber Grommets 1 1/8 x 23/32 x 5/16 Model 881262'' " Umm... what the H did I just buy then? I have a bag (one grommet) in front of me. Strange.

:)

Here are two of those 881262 grommets installed (loosely at the moment - I will use black silicone in their grooves when I really install them.)

PS: Now that I see it in the photo, that fender edge is going to get painted - sooner than later - just too cold to paint in my garage still.
