Expert 5K+ Posts: 9900 Location: Lower Mainland BC | This: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/1956-Dodge-Coronet/173243610695?hash=item285... Interesting (to me), that the engine bay shows as a 2bbl "Red Ram" which should be a 270 poly in a 56 Dodge. And, drum roll, drum roll, the listing says it is a "270". Finally a Red Ram with Red Ram and not Super Red Ram valve cover decals.

A 270 could never be a Super Red Ram, even with a 4 bbl carb and dual exhausts. Super Red Rams were 315 polys with 2 bbls and probably single exhaust. Super-Powered Super Red Rams with 315 polys with 4bbls and dual exhaust. Hate to be pedantic but...

As I sure as hell have never been able to find one. You didn't look hard enough. Try the FL Magazine thread. I just posted a scan of an article that I've had for a while (see below as well) The base engine in the 56 V8 Coronet was the 270 cu in 2 bbl Red Ram poly. The base V8 in the Royal and the Custom Royal was the 218 hp 2 bbl 315 Super Red Ram poly. In all cases, you could order an upgrade to the 230 hp, 315 4bbl dual exhaust Super-Powered Super Red Ram engine. It cost more for the upgrade from the base Coronet 270 Red Ram V8 than the upgrade from the 315 Super Red Ram poly. Here are two pages from the June 2007 issue of Hemmings. Shows the 2bbl 218 hp 315 Super Red Ram Poly in the engine bay and the single tail pipe coming out the back.

Member Posts: 8 Location: Springfield MO | I guess I'm slow on the uptake. Please clarify... I have a 1956 Dodge Coronet (no other indications that is anything above that model) and I have (as far as I know) a 270ci. What do I have (or should I have?) ... a "Red Ram"? I was told my engine was "gone over" so it has been painted light blue all over.

Regular Posts: 65 | Well that information conflicts with J "Kelly" Flory Jr's book - American Cars 1946-1959 Every Model, year by year (There also isn't a picture of the 2BBL and that guy has the wrong brake booster) The book lists 230 CID Get away Six 270CID Red Ram 2BBL 8:01 189 HP 315 CID Red Ram 2BBL 8:01 218HP 315 CID Super Red Ram 4BBL 8:01 230 HP 315 CID D-500 Dual 4BBL 9.25:1 260 HP The Super Powered Part of the Red Ram for 56 refereed to the Aircraft Type Hemi Heads - and it was available on all models in 56. Red Ram is 2BBL 315 Super Red Ram 315 4 BBL As also listed in your previous specs sheet, the Super Powered Super Red ram came STANDARD on Royal and Custom royal. Standard means you don't pay extra for it. So no, I didn't read your magazine thread, as magazines are unreliable. But neither did you apparently read my large collection of dodge books.

I was told my engine was "gone over" so it has been painted light blue all over. 56RatKing is still ripped that his Canadian Custom Royal got a 303 Plymouth V8 that was labeled Super Red Ram so that is why I was careful with my words and references. If your car is a Coronet V8 it might have the 270 2 bbl polyspherical "poly" (zig-zag valve covers) , labeled "Red Ram". There should be and engine number stamped somewhere near the front of the engine, above the water pump. If your car has a polyspherical V8 and it has a 4 bbl carburetor and dual exhaust, it is likely a Super Powered Super Red Ram 230 hp with "Super Red Ram" on the valve covers. If your car has polyspherical V8 and a 2 bbl single exhaust it could be a 315 cu in Super Red Ram. Again, the engine number near the front of the engine might be the telling point. I've been told by old hands here that since the engines left the factory completely silver, if your's is light blue, it is a sign that it was rebuilt. Rebuilders apparently were partial to that blue. My 56 Dodge D500 315 hemi engine was light blue when I bought it. Slowly slowly I am painting mine silver. REFERENCE: Edited by 56D500boy 2018-04-02 3:21 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9900 Location: Lower Mainland BC | My comments are in bold inside your quote 56RatKing - 2018-04-02 3:09 PM Well that information conflicts with J "Kelly" Flory Jr's book - American Cars 1946-1959 Every Model, year by year (too many years, too open to mistakes) (There also isn't a picture of the 2BBL and that guy has the wrong brake booster) Wrong brake boost on the white, red and charcoal 4dr? You're wrong. The accordion bellows type booster is correct. The book lists 230 CID Get away Six - EXCEPT IN CANADA when it as a 251 270 CID Red Ram 2BBL 8:01 189 HP AGREE - wow!! 315 CID Red Ram 2BBL 8:01 218HP NOPE -Super Red Ram 315 CID Super Red Ram 4BBL 8:01 230 HP NOPE - "Super Powered- Super Red Ram" (but still Super Red Ram on the poly valve cover) 315 CID D-500 Dual 4BBL 9.25:1 260 HP AGREE The Super Powered Part of the Red Ram for 56 refereed to the Aircraft Type Hemi Heads - and it was available on all models in 56. The airplane bit got abused by the advertising department. It should have just been the hemis but they used it on the polys as well Red Ram is 2BBL 315 NOPE 270 Super Red Ram 315 4 BBL Kind of - it was labeled Super Red Ram on the valve covers - just like the 218 hp 315 poly As also listed in your previous specs sheet, the Super Powered Super Red ram came STANDARD on Royal and Custom royal. Standard means you don't pay extra for it. Read the specs again. Slowly. Use your finger on the screen. Move your lips if it helps. So no, I didn't read your magazine thread, as magazines are unreliable. But neither did you apparently read my large collection of dodge books. Apparently poorly researched books are also unreliable I can't continue to give you the same correct info over and over. You aren't getting it.

Elite Veteran Posts: 792 Location: Buena Park, CA | All 270 Poly's in '56 were Red Rams, all 315 Poly's in '56 were Super Red Rams, Super Powered Super Red Rams were 315 Poly's with the 4 barrel carb and upgraded IBJ 4303B distributor. A 315 Hemi in 1956 is the D500 option, and not a Super Red Ram. It appears that J "Kelly" Flory Jr's book - American Cars 1946-1959 book is incorrect and gets some stuff confused with the 1955 Dodges where the 270 Poly was the Red Ram and the 270 Hemi was referred to as the Super Red Ram.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9665 Location: So. Cal | It makes sense as they used similar designations by motor size in '57 and '58. But they made it confusing because they kept the names, but moved the meaning from year to year as the options changed. Anyone care to dictate what the motor options were called in '58? I know they had: 6 cylinder (get away? - and stay away! ) Red Ram 325 poly 2bbl (super powered?) Red Ram 325 poly 4bbl ??? Chrysler 354 poly in Canada only Super Red Ram 350 big block 2bbl (super powered?) Super Red Ram 350 big block 4bbl? D500 361 big block 4bbl only

I just go to the appropriate year brochure and find out what they said, in this case, for the six (6) 1958 Dodge engines they called them:

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9665 Location: So. Cal | Interesting that the Ram-Fire 350 was only available with a 4bbl, but the 350 & 361 in the '58 DeSoto's came standard with a 2bbl. People paid a lot more for a DeSoto, but had to pay even more to get the same horsepower as that of a Dodge with the same motor. But at least the 2bbl on the DeSoto is a really good carb, unlike the crappy BBD 2bbl on the 325 motors.
