Elite Veteran Posts: 943 | I need hood hinges for my 57 dodge wagon. I've got a pretty big pile of them but they all came to me in a box and I can't tell if they are any good or not (i.e. stuck) Any way to 'test' them before installing on the car? Also are hood hinges Dodge specific or would Chrysler and Desoto hood hinges work?

I think it would be almost impossible to try the action, without the hood (or similar amount of leverage) You will most likely need to rebuild whatever hinges you have...they get sloppy over time. And of course, many seize. I had mine rebuilt- new bushings installed, and new pins- by SMS Auto in Derry, New Hampshire. No affiliation with SMS Auto Fabrics. If you need new springs as well, a fellow member on here sells them...

Elite Veteran Posts: 943 | Thanks. How much did they charge you to rebuild them?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | I agree. Put the hinge in a good vice, remove the spring with a coat hanger and good pair of gloves, then test the movement to see if there is much side play. Most of the hinges I have encountered have been in great shape with little to no repair needed. If the car was made in Los Angeles, the springs were painted a primer red rust color. If Detroit made, I believe they were cadmium plated, but not sure. Gregcon was the person who had them made and sold them on here. I'm not sure if the ebay person is him or not.

Expert Posts: 1737 Location: Hay Lakes, Alberta, Canada | FINS! - 2018-04-30 9:32 PM Thanks. How much did they charge you to rebuild them? $239 plus shipping. I think I'll have to send my Caddy ones next...the one hinge is sloppy, and I have to push the hood corner down by hand, to make the hood close fully.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | I made a thing to hold the springs for removal and I used a long bar that I bolted to the hood mounts to "close" the hinge. It was bolted to the firewall but you could do it in a vice if its all mounted strong enough (the springs are pretty strong) Anyway, look on the bottom of the first page and you will see how the spring thing worked. After the spring is gone, its easy to manipulate the hinge http://forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=38117&star...
