I need hood hinges for my 57 dodge wagon. I've got a pretty big pile of them but they all came to me in a box and I can't tell if they are any good or not (i.e. stuck) Any way to 'test' them before installing on the car? Also are hood hinges Dodge specific or would Chrysler and Desoto hood hinges work?

The hood hinges are the same, across the line, with the exception on Imperial. The only real way to test them is to install them. I think it would be almost impossible to try the action, without the hood (or similar amount of leverage)

You will most likely need to rebuild whatever hinges you have...they get sloppy over time. And of course, many seize.

I had mine rebuilt- new bushings installed, and new pins- by SMS Auto in Derry, New Hampshire. No affiliation with SMS Auto Fabrics. If you need new springs as well, a fellow member on here sells them...

Thanks. How much did they charge you to rebuild them?

Brad, do you (or anyone else) recall who sells the hood springs? I have a guy asking me about them, so I'm glad I happened to see your comment in this post.

I agree. Put the hinge in a good vice, remove the spring with a coat hanger and good pair of gloves, then test the movement to see if there is much side play. Most of the hinges I have encountered have been in great shape with little to no repair needed. If the car was made in Los Angeles, the springs were painted a primer red rust color. If Detroit made, I believe they were cadmium plated, but not sure. Gregcon was the person who had them made and sold them on here. I'm not sure if the ebay person is him or not.

$239 plus shipping.

I think I'll have to send my Caddy ones next...the one hinge is sloppy, and I have to push the hood corner down by hand, to make the hood close fully.

I made a thing to hold the springs for removal and I used a long bar that I bolted to the hood mounts
to "close" the hinge. It was bolted to the firewall but you could do it in a vice if its all mounted strong enough (the springs are pretty strong)
Anyway, look on the bottom of the first page and you will see how the spring thing worked. After the spring is gone, its easy to manipulate the hinge

This guy gives good advice for what to do to restore them to good operation and good looks again. His method for spring removal at 1:20 is very simple and works amazingly well.
