Extreme Veteran Posts: 363 | Since I have the top half off my 392 hemi, I thought it was a good time to sought out an oil leak at the filter canister. It was a minor leak but was directly over the exhaust, I'm not sure if it was coming from the base of the canister to the mounting flange or quite possibly from the top of the canister where the centre bolt goes through it. Does it have an O-ring or gasket between the head of this centre bolt and the canister body? Looks like a job to seperate this bolt/spring arrangement from the housing? Any tricks/tips or advice appreciated, apart from the "replace with a spin on unit". I wanna keep the cartridge type. Thanks Owen

Veteran Posts: 259 Location: Detroit MI area | Owen, The flat rubber base gasket around the filter cartridge can be hard to keep in place when tightening the bolt. It is the easier fix. On my car it leaked between the bolt and canister. The fiber washer under the bolt head went missing. Years of use can also deform the metal around the bolt hole or under the head. Can't replace the washer with the bolt fixed in the can. I never had any luck with rubber flat and O rings under the bolt. Had limited success using a few wraps of packing (or even cotton) string under the bolt head but it can come out as the bolt is tightened. The real fix is how to get the bolt out or find a better can. Jim K

The real fix is dumping the OE cannister and buying a Hot Heads Spin-on adapter. http://www.hothemiheads.com/oiling_system/oil_filter_adapter_30d.ht... Extreme Veteran Posts: 363 | JimK - 2018-05-08 7:16 AM Thanks Jim, I've put a very thin section O ring under the bolt head, it seems to fit nicely wth no pick up when I turn the bolt. It actually seemed like without some sought of gasket in there the bolt was nearly bottoming out before tightening the cannister to the base.
