There is a car on the Los Angeles craigslist that claims to be a D500 Texan convertible. Was a Texan convertible actually made, or is this a car customized the way someone wanted it?

Only FCA would know for sure and you'd have to be the owner to get the information.

For 56, the Texan was a dealer thing. I seriously doubt FCA would be capable of authenticating it.

But it's another 56 CRL convertible, and with a stick. Mighty rare thing, and very cool. Does it belong to tailfins? I see the location is at 91 and 110, I lived there in Torrance for six months, years ago. Loved it.

Agreed. Also true for 57 and 58.

Does this car also have overdrive? Very unique car in any case.

Look at the photos closely. There are no holes in the body for the
upkick in the side trim, reserved for the Custom series cars, yet the
car has the toothed grille bars and painted healight doors of the Custom
series. I would be inclined to think it easier/more likely that a Custom
Royal/Sierra nose clip or parts were swapped onto a Coronet than the
holes being welded up on the quarters, but one would need to look it
over in person to check for those holes. The car also wears the non-
Custom series tail light rings.

Texans were a local-regional dealer promotional "option", and from
all indications, could be ordered on any body or model. However, most
survivors seem to be low end Coronets and sedans.

As far as I know, records were not kept on Texan production. It is
not even known if dealers had "set" Texan packages, or if the badges
and perhaps upgrades were applied at random ... I suspect so.

Disirregardlessly, that's a helluva hard car to find, and it looks to be
in very good (dry) shape. Find another one that's nicer !

You could sort-of verify it by finding out where it was originally sold. If it wasn't sold into Texas, you know it isn't original.

Also, weren't those bumper teeth a cost option for other lower-line models? The lack of the proper side trim is the real clincher to tell you it isn't a custom royal. I believe that tailfins lives in the bay area, but he likes to advertise a lot in LA.

Looks like a Coronet (or Royal) that is missing the last piece of trim, 1646 894 (Custom Royal used the 1645 858 and needed more holes)

The grill teeth were not listed as an accessory in the 56 Dodge Accessories Brochure, but they probably could be bought as separate items through the dealer system

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=64842&...

Grill "Teeth" = Caps on the collision damage diagram, 1655 344 (3, Right) and 1655 345 (3, Left), $1.65 each (LOL !!)

Picking nits here, but convertibles were only offered in the
Coronet and Custom series. The Royal was denied.

Pick away. Hope they taste good.

My point was not about which models got Convertibles, i.e. Coronet, Royal or Custom Royal. It was about the aft-most piece of side trim that was shared by the Coronet and Royal but was different for the Custom Royal (because of the "kick" (or "hockey stick").

Understood. I was thinking more about how others might read this and
get the idea that there was a convertible offered in the Royal model lineup.

Okay. I see your point. To be clear, the following info from my 56 Dodge Data book is offered:

Those front floor sections and tunnel don't look like factory stampings to me. I'd be very wary of this whole car. And if found to have been rusted and not able to document, then the price is seriously high.

When I first looked at the tunnel, I thought that it was narrow but since the car had a manual transmission, I figured that it might be okay.

What I now notice on second glance is the lack of the inspection panel at the driver's feet. Having spend some time down there, I am surprised that I don't see any signs of one. Also seems be a lack of strenghtening ribs/valleys.

Not too surprising. Most convertibles end up with patched floors. It's just the nature of the beast....But one would hope for a more professional job than this.

Are you guys sure we're not just looking at a really dirty carpet or floor mat? That's what it looks like to me.
