Fell in my lap, only 15 miles away, just couldn't resist.
Former CA car with completely rebuilt drivetrain, and on the road.
I have a feeling my '59 'dome sedan will be going down the road very soon, as in bye bye,
the garage only holds 3 cars and this one makes 4, so the wife, as tolerant as she is, has drawn the line.
But got really lucky with this one: right place, right time, right car, right price. Sometime the fates smile upon you.

Will you be adding 2 extra doors ?

Shame about the red paint, but it is hard to beat a 57-58 big
body coupe or convertible DeSoto.

Why is it when I buy a 58 DeSoto from upstate NY, it's in pieces, but you find one like this?
Congratulations. That's awesome.

Thanks guys, I'm psyched more than I have been over a car in a long long while, really got lucky this time, for sure... and you are right Doc, I actually WOULD have preferred this to be a 4 door Sportsman, as crazy as that sound to most people. But sometimes you take what you find, and if I ever am forced to sell (I'm living sort of on the edge like most folks) it's what most people want. Besides the rust-free nice driver Black & Spruce '58 NYer convert from dry Nevada that I found only 10 miles from home, back when I lived in Maryland in the '80s, (car now in Sweden), this is the by FAR the best break on a vintage car I've ever had. I thank God my wife let me break the bank to get it, I think even she realized the wonderful opportunity knocking. This car runs & drives great, and because it's probably my last old car, it will have a good home here. Now to start saving for a new interior. BTW this car was originally Willow Green! I wish it still was too, it would be pretty unique, but paint jobs are so expensive... guess I need to start playing the lottery.

Thanks Mike! She's the 2 dr kissin' cousin to your red 'Dome convert!
All I have are those 2 pics off Binghamton Craigslist: the seller deleted the ad so fast I didn't even have time to copy the other pics. Actually the whole thing happened so fast my head is still spinning. He put the car on Thursday morning, I called him at 4 PM and made an appt for 10 Friday morning. After a very sleepless and nervous night worrying that I'd get snaked, I was a 1/2 hr. early, by 10AM had given him a cash deposit and we had a deal. We agreed to meet at the bank that afternoon at 4 so he could deposit it, gave him the cash balance inside and did the paperwork... then the hard part, the waiting, began.. Spent the day re-organizing the garage, and if all goes well it'll be here by tomorrow afternoon and I will get those pics!

Meantime trying to figure out how to afford a paint job and interior... really like the idea of going back to the original WIllow (light) Green body, and Spruce Green Iridescent (medium green metallic) roof and side sweep. I'd guess most would not agree, but like the idea of matching the data plate, I like green, and have never seen a coupe in that combo, though I think there was a '58 convert in Spruce Green with Willow sweep on auction recently? maybe a FireSweep? However ours will probably remain Red for quite a while.

Thanks all!

Would like to go green, but as usual it's all 'bout the bucks. A complete excellent quality in-&-outside paint job & interior = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$! I'm glad the mechanicals seem strong. It will probably remain a nice fun driver while being slowly upgraded. Meantime I should set aside $10/week for lottery tickets!

here's a '58 'vert in Willow & Spruce, in the reverse pattern - dark body, light side sweep.
Love the colors.

She's here! Evidence of green under trunk gaskets looks like the original paint was identical to the convert above - Spruce body and Willow top & sweep... what a gorgeous combo!

Interior is non-original but mostly quite usable, stainless all present and really straight. paint faded but usable, pits on some of the pot-metal, overall I'd call a good #3 to 4 20 footer. Should be a fun car to drive as-is and slowly upgrade. Seems to run very strong, eand ven has dual exhaust, not standard on a 'Dome, AND dual fin antennas - connected and still in the trunk!! The bases of them are cracked and maybe they wouldn't stay tight. He even found original CALI plates and put them on.

Only way I'd part with this one is a trade for an original totally rust-free '57 or '58, maaaybe a '59 Sportsman 4 door hardtop, my personal favorite.

Images and a quick note from Roger:

Post what you feel like. last will be a pic of trunk 1/2 before and after some cleaning, the car had not been washed/waxed for at least 5 yrs and sat out last 1 year :-(
Will change the oil/ & filter and more cleaning today, I can still do light work but get tired out pretty quickly. This is fun work though!

Thanks Mike!
It's a classic 20 footer, little dings here and there, pitting on some of the pot-metal, non-original but very usable interior, fairly new Coker Classic radials, tires and car quite dirty at present. I cleaned 1/2 of the trunk and it's shining up nicely so far. The tail-fin antennas are still connected and in the trunkl Motor and tranny were completely rebuilt less than 1k miles ago, the trans by a good local shop, and the engine by a well know local East Coast drag racer and Master Mechanic named Bob Chipper, who died a couple years ago...and the motor does run sweet!! I'll try to post a pic of his drag Vega next!

Guy who built the 361: Bob Chipper and his locally renowned drag Vega:
he was known as a master mechanic, couldn't ask for a better builder!
And it does run sweet for sure!

BTW: the data plate reveals paint was not Spruce & Willow Green etc, the code says White body with French Turquoise Iridescent top & side sweep, but a close examination under gaskets, trim and paint chips shows it was actually a Turquoise body with White top and sweep... go figure!!

Check out that data tag post, Roger

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=20263&posts=197#M563529

I was wrong about the paint scheme - it actually is coded for a Pearl White top, French Turquoise body, and Pearl White sweep.
