I think what you want is this (1571 542 switch). They just screw into the door jamb. You can extract them from the door with the wire attached. Then remove the wire, put it in the new switch and screw the switch and wire back into the door.

I have one in my hand - BUT it's MINE, MINE, for "My Precious".
