I have two original starters from a 1957 poly 354 and from a early-hemi of some sort.

Both have 9 teeth on the gear but other one has slightly different diameter.

Was there two different flywheels used and different starters for poly and hemi?

Or is it just some tolerance that won't matter in the use?

There isn't a difference between hemi and poly. The differences are between the years. An early starter would be 6 volt if it was made before '55. The nose cones, gears etc all changed at many points in time so it isn't likely to be able to swap things around outside of known interchangeability. If you are asking about some specific starter, you need to give us more info about it, more than "of some sort". But something to keep in mind is that green tags generally denote 12 volt, and red tags denote 6 volt.

There was 6 V & 12V, plus 146 tooth flywheels then 172. If OEm starters do you have the parts numbers?
