I recommend using KYB. Use the same part as for a late 70's Corvette. You will need to widen the lower slots, but other than that, it is a direct bolt-on. The part number is listed on this site in multiple places if you do a search. Here it is again: KG4550

Front shocks for a Ford Aerostar RWD (not AWD) are a direct bolt in with NO modifications required. This makes the KYB number KG5460.

Hope you're right. I just bought the last one Rock Auto had (wholesaler clear out). CAD$ 23.41 plus taxes and shipping CAD $37.90 all in. Now to find another one.

EDIT: Found one in Canada for twice the money but my local FLAPS (Lordco) didn't have any so I went for it. Cost averaging will be okay.

I ordered Rare Parts #50745 for a whopping $159.99. When I received them I noticed some red paint showing through the black that looked like the color of my Gabriel shocks I have on the back of my ‘56 Coronet. I then cross referenced the number on the shock and it came up as a Gabriel Guardian 81582. I ordered these on sale from Summit for $12 each and when they came in they were the EXACT same as the “Rare Parts” piece. They literally spray painted cheap, everyday shocks and sold them for a ridiculous price. Needless to say I got my refund. I also went into CarQuest and compared it with a Monroe shock for an Aerostar. Dimensions and mounting tabs are identical. Anyways, I have pics of all of this but I’m not smart enough to figure out how to post them...

Surprise surprise. Rock Auto still has them - just not at the wholesaler clear-out price. More than what I paid Rock Auto yesterday but less than the one I bought from Wrench Monkey.

LOL. The Wrench Monkey emailed me today and told me that they didn't have stock for the KG5460 but if I wanted to wait 2 or 3 weeks, they would proceed. I told them (via email, their 1-800 number is less than useless) that I wanted to pull the plug and get my money back.

Then I went to Rock Auto and ordered one more KYB KG5460 (but at the new, higher, non-clear-out price). I'm having this one shipped to me in Canada. End up paying FedEx the CDN duty (about $2.50) so the total crept back towards (but still lower than) the Wrench Monkey's price.

For fun, I checked with my local FLAPS (Lordco) for Aerostar RWD front shocks. They have Monroe front shocks for a 1990 Aerostar for about the same price as the first KYB I bought.

OE Premium 37058:

or a Monroe-Matic Plus 32132

Prices were in the CDN$35 to $53 range. *IF* he had a KYB KG5460 it would be CD$83 so the KYB is seemingly a better shock (if you believe price reflects quality)

The second one (shipped to Canada) arrived today. The first one is sitting in Point Roberts but I used up my "freebee" this AM picking up a "NOS" (supposedly) eBrake drum from Atlas Obsolete.

The box that the shock was in was four times the volume of the shock-in-the-box. Lots of air padding. No damage (but the tip of the shock was sticking out of the shock box).

Picked up the first one today. It was the Rock Auto clearance shock. Came in a box labelled KG5460 but the shock was white not silver and the stamping was different so I was confused.

I tried to contact Rock Auto but I discovered that they have no Custom Service phone line and, in general, communication is next to impossible.

So I found KYB North America and sent a Tech question:

" I recently bought two shocks for a 1990 Ford Aerostar RWD van over the internet. They were both supposed to be KG5460.
One came and it is white and it is stamped KG5460 EK14 K. So I think I got what I wanted.
The second one came and it is silver. Looks about the same size, etc. as the white one but it is stamped 554150 OE30 K.
Both boxes have KG5460 labels on them but to me that means nothing.
I don't know if these shocks are really the same or what. I couldn't get an answer from the seller.

Could you please check this out and get back to me? I want to put them on my vehicle but I won't until I know what is what. Thanks."

They got back to me with this:

"Dave,
They are the same shocks and both are the KG5460 that you ordered. 554150 is our internal stamping number for this shock.
Gas-a-Just shocks used to be powder-coated white, but in the last few years, we have been moving these shocks to our global color scheme which is silver. So your silver shock is from a recent production run, while your white shock is from an earlier production run. Regards,

Hopefully this will be my last post in this thread.

After KYB replied that the white and the silver shocks are both KG5460s, I sent them this:

"Thanks. Good to know (that they are the same).
Would I void the warranty if I painted them the same colour?, i.e. if I painted the white one silver *OR* the silver one white? (or both red or something?)
Dave F"

To which they replied:

David, Painting the shocks will not void the warranty as long as the new paint does not interfere with the piston rod or mount ends.
Regards, Technical Support, KYB Americas Corporation, techsupport@kyb.com"

Now to pick a colour.
