I just started a 1956 DeSoto Fireflite Sportsman after 5-8 years of not running. I thought I had the essential wiring all connected to start the car. When I hit the key, the starter turns over, but I don't get power to the coil unless I go directly from the battery. Are there any obvious causes for this?

Thanks

You must have some bad wiring somewhere, time to get out the volt meter. Start tracing the ignition wire back to the ignition switch. Check to see if you have 12 volts at the ballast resistor. Trace it back from there.

This 56 Dodge wiring diagram will be similar to that for a 56 Desoto

I will add these diagrams from the 56 Dodge Service Manual in hopes that they help. However, I just discovered that, to me, both the 8 cylinder B &W diagram and the colour diagram have an error with respect to the ballast resistor (I think). I understood that the ballast resistor was on the upstream side of the coil, not the down stream side. Maybe I'm confused?

Interesting -- the first diagram shows coil resistor between coil and distributor , and the second diagram shows NO coil resistor !!! I always thought the coil (ballast) resistor went before the + of the coil !!!
