Where is the Secondary VIN Location on a 55 Desoto? I have to get the VIN inspected at the DMV and I'm guessing they won't know.

2nd VIN numbers aren't required for vehicles before 1970. I went through this a while ago with my '58 Coronet. The DMV counter person initially sent me on a wild goose chase because she didn't know what she was talking about. Finding it on your DeSoto can be next to impossible.

Really? I had to do an inspection on a 68 Roadrunner and they checked the secondary number. Its the dealer order number on a 68 and they guy didn't believe me, it didn't match the VIN so he wouldn't verify. So I know that the "before 1970" is incorrect. Now 1955, I don't know.

He obviously didn't know what he was doing as is the case with many state employees. It is correct because it isn't possible to match the secondary number to the VIN on a '68 without the build sheet. Secondary VIN inspections are all just smoke and mirrors for cars before 1970 to try and scare people. But if the 2 secondaries don't match each other, they might have a case to say something. But for these early cars, the secondary VIN, if it has one, is located on the frame. Sometimes it was lightly stamped, sometimes painted on there, and sometimes not put on there at all. Good luck finding it, and if you do find it, good luck reading it.

I don't know what state you are in, but definitely California doesn't require finding the secondary VIN on vehicles before 1970. If someone tells you otherwise, they are clueless. Insist on talking with someone else and having them look it up on the books.
