To it's credit, it looks like a solid vehicle. But asking $35000 for this is just beyond crazy! He even claims that when restored, it will be worth $152000!!!! I might believe that if it was the 60 Plymouth turbine, but this is just a plain jane sedan with a slant six in it.

Yeah, $3500 and $15200 would make more sense.

My interest in most things, particularly cars, is aesthetic. To my design
sensibilities, there are only two years of Plymouth through the Forward
Look period that I'd like enough to own. The 58, which I consider about
as close to design perfection, ... proportion, cohesive elements, etc. as
Plymouth ever got, and the 61, not a pretty car, but one that carries a
bizarre design through from one end to the other.

I struggle with the 60. It has a number of really neat design elements,
but fails to tie major themes together enough to really "sync". The lowered
beltline gives the fins a hyper dramatic lift and swoop. The super funky
rear wheel opening is just too cool. But the rather blunt features of the
nose and fenders simply look like they were taken from another design
study and clash with the slippery sides and rear.

Something that always bugged me about the 60 Plymouth is that same
lowered beltline that makes the fins so dramatic also leaves a rather odd
and bulbous decklid profile sticking up behind the rear glass.

I like the 60 Plymouth overall, but not enough to commit the resources
to to have and restore one. Not when 58's and 61's are an option and
age and shop space and other commitments limit just how many cars a
guy can drag home.

That said, it makes a discussion about prices and interest an amusing
conversation, as it would not matter if the car were priced at $35K or
$35, I would not want one. Overall, it looks like a really nice car, in the
sense of decent body and minimal "deep" work to make it nice. But in
the car culture tradition of go-fast and sleek body types trumping all
other considerations, this car ranks way low on the things most car guys
have traditionally chased.

I always hope that all these cars find loving homes and get seen out on
the road just doing what they were originally built to do ... go get groceries
and take the kids to basketball games. Nothing makes me happier about
old cars than seeing them this way. I sure hope this seller sees the value
in this and sells to a buyer that maintains and drives it for the pleasure of
driving it. Regardless of being a sixer-sedan or a Sonoramic convertible,
60 Plymouths in any form look like a million bucks going down the road
like it is still 1962.

I agree, Doc. I've owned a '60 Savoy 4-door sedan and that area behind the rear window always bothered me--it just seemed the
low belt line should have been the beginning of the windows, but that extra rounded space seemed to just fill the gap and not "flow"
with the design.

The answer? A wagon, of course! That space is not nearly as pronounced, as the rear side windows alleviate that awkward bulb.
I love my '60 wagon, although I've toyed with the idea of putting a '61 Plymouth front clip on--the best of both worlds. But, alas,
I'm a slave to keeping things original...
Unless, I've told myself, the front end gets damaged at any point.
Pete

I have to also admit to not liking that area around the rear window, it almost kills the fin

I wonder if I 2 toned mine if you could sort of make it disappear by me leaving the bonnet, roof and boot ect flat black or at most Saturn black and the sides under the fin trim
a bright blue hi gloss

I don't have photo shop, but basically, the black it is now, the blue from this car and no lower trims along the sills and no washboards ect and black tinted windows

It would almost make the side look like the 60 dodge fender spear

I agree Pete, the '60 Plymouth makes a REALLY nice looking wagon. One of the best looking wagons ever made. The only others that can compete with it are the '56 Dodge/Plymouth/DeSoto, '60-'61 Chrysler & '60 Polara/Matador wagons. If I were to purchase a '60 Plymouth, it would definitely be in wagon form.

Actually, in my book, the coolest 60 plymouth feature (except for the fins) are the rear wheel openings and the roof of the coupe, nothing of that used on the wagon. One has to be into far out 50s/googie design to "understand" the 60 Fury. The 60 Fury is googie on wheels. Look at the crazy front wheel opening, to quote a FL-member: "like the front fenders are being ripped back by the speed of the car!" Maybe it is the googiest car in automobile history. That is why I own one. Love at first sight.

Gotta admit, the 60 coupe has a lot going for it.

I think the whole deal with the 'low belt line' and the unusual rear deck 'bulge' in the back probably had something to do with keeping the styling proportions correct without using too many unique components. The 60 Plymouth's exterior design is incredibly ambitious (like all the 60-61's) and trying to fix the way the trunk lid blends with the sides and the fins is hard to do without changing the size of the canopy and windows, adding length to the car, and/or enlarging the fins. Changing the canopy and certain other parts was probably not an option though since it has to share some parts and components with Dodge, so the rear deck design was likely a compromise to make use of the shared components while still keeping the proportions of the original design. The design changes would have been small, but remember what happened in 62 when the already designed cars underwent a forced reduction in size that was only about 3 inches? This is all just conjecture of course. The only other thing I can come up with is that it may have been some sort of aerodynamic reason, as that gap between the trunk and fins probably amplifies the 'stabilizing' effect that Plymouth marketed in 60.

That said, the 60 Plymouth is awesome in almost every way. The rear wheel opening looks great in my opinion especially with that huge trim and wheel skirts like Sid has on his Fury. The 2D hardtop canopy is probably the best looking canopy ever put on a car and the fact that the designers were able to make such a crazy looking front end look so good is just incredible. I've been considering selling my 57 Chrysler and buying a 60 Fury 2D HT instead, but still not 100% sure yet.
