For fun I picked up a set of four 56 Dodge poverty hub caps. How will they attach to the wheel? Clips or ??

I might run them with my 85 Dodge Diplomat cop car wheels.

There are 2 types of dog dish caps for the '56 Dodge. The type in your picture is the bad, older type. I say bad because they require the use of special wheels with clips attached to it and a large lip at the center of the wheel. You really need to have the original wheels in order to run them. The second type of dog dish (like in my picture) is the same type as used by everyone else during this period. They are much easier to mount because they use the nubs that are built into *most* wheels up until the 90's. But they are larger than the later dog dish caps so they won't fit on later wheels without modifications. The change-over in size happened around 1966-67. But to use them on later wheels isn't too hard, you just need to weld 1/2" spacers to the nubs, and mount the caps to those spacers like I did for my '58 Coronet.

By the way, there is a guy on Ebay that is selling vinyl kits to apply to the black areas so you don't have to paint them. Kinda nice to save you some trouble. But I ended up painting the black on mine and they come out great if you take your time doing it.

Thanks Nathan. I guess I should have asked the question *BEFORE* I hit the "BUY IT NOW" button on eBay. Crapparappa.

Oh well, at least I learned something new.

If you can find a set of the original wheels for those caps, there are companies that can widen them for you so that you can run a performance tire on them. They weld new hoops to the original centers. More trouble and expense, but they do look good when done, and it is easy because these wheels are 15". Who knows, your original wheels may already have what is required to mount them on there. Did you take a look at them to see?

I've enclosed some pictures of the wheels and caps from my '55 Dodge. Far as I know, that type of clip was used all the way back into the 30's.

'56 was evidently the first year for the new type of clip.

Thanks for that idea. I have all five original wheels (in storage) but none of them have the poverty cap clips. This is presumably because my car is a Custom Royal and came with the two-bar spinner full disc wheel covers.

My car as found (Sept. 2016):

Thanks Rob. None of my five original wheels have those clips.

But good to know.

Had not thought of that; It's possible that cars that came with full wheel covers did not have these clips.

(My '55 Dodge is a low-option Royal and came with the small caps.)

Picked up the eBay set of four poverty dog dishes today. Pretty good shape. A couple of small dints.

Turns out that my spare tire had the clips and the caps fit on fine. Tried on of the poverty caps against my cop car wheels. Won't work with out some significant mods.

This is what these caps would look like on your cop car rims Dave. Surprisingly it is a little bigger than the '57 caps. You might need 9/16" or maybe 5/8" spacers instead of the 1/2" that I used. You could add a stainless trim ring to the outside too if you like.
