I have used the Duralast brand alternators in the past and they worked well for me. Sometimes, you do get unlucky though and have to make a return.

Always buy lifetime warranty parts from AutoZone. The set number of year warranty parts tend to quite just after the warranty expires.(sister used to work for them)

I've used various Duralast lifetime warranty parts, including alternators, with good results, other than when Mopar starters start crapping out they tend to hang up. A tap with a hammer will get 'em going for a few starts till they hang up the next time. Unfortunately they won't honor the warranty if it will work on the test bed.

Rock Auto won't take returns after 30 days, so don't delay installing/testing.

Yeah i like the logic for duralast. "well its going to break, i want the one which at least gets me a free replacement after it faiils just after one year"...

I have no idea HOW autozone times it perfectly so their parts fail JUST after one year... its insane just how good they are at failing on that exact time frame... its uncanny.

I have had about a 50% fail rate on autozone house brand china/india refurbs... Its not pretty.

I like to buy one that lasts 10 years, ill take the extra savings and simply buy a better quality part.

Same price, just the one from Rockauto lasts 5 times what the junk autozone one does and i dont have to play games with it removing/reinstalling it, potential tow, and fighting the warranty with autozone.

I would have probably went with the AC Delco, professional, reman for 48$.  AC Delco stuff is top notch.  I dont think ive ever had a failure.  I help friends and family fix their cars.

I seriously doubt if any of the big-box auto supplies have their own dedicated rebuild facilities, the parts probably come from the same rebuild factories and go into a different box for each brand. A local rebuild shop willo usually give you a better product but at a higher price. Ya get what ya pay for.

I have a duralast starter it lasted 20 years plus. it failed on a cruise so we pushed the car up onto the curb ay the Sonic drive in, I pulled the starter walked next door into the Autozone and traded it for a new one. Limited lifetime warranty. Funny the starter was in the car longer than the cashier was alive. Should have seen her face, Free? yes free.

The alternator I bought from RockAuto was a Remy Industries restored in Mexico. Looks good, now let's see if it works and for how long.

I have a small electric shop local to me, the owner once showed me the difference between his rebuilt alternator and the big-box store's.

On the back of the BB store's round-back alternator, you could see the pressed-in diodes all showed signs of media blasting which meant they were never replaced or replaced one at a time if they failed the test. All his units have brand new diodes. It might be an insignificant difference but the word "rebuilt" isn't accurate if old parts that fail with age are reused.

If you just need an alternator, water pump what ever hit the discounters. Thing is if it's an old one. Have it rebuilt. Reason for this look at the rebuilt ones from the discounters or even NAPA, Car Quest or if any Big-A's are left. The shells have casting numbers and dates on each side. The rebuilders just take shells and throw them together. But a lifetime warranty is great especially if you keep your reciept and it hasn't faded away either. I like Rock auto because you can get new stuff and not remaned cores, even with gold anodized pulleys. On another note about Auto Zone I bought a 4 year battery in April 4 years ago this past April and it is still working.

To my knowledge, there are no pre made kits available for your installation. It's not too hard to do yourself if you have basic fabrication skills, or have a shop do the task.

Plymouth Poly 277? Should be the same as the 318 to 1966/7 Heads may have a boss for the bracket, I'm sure it can be done with a 1960 or later alternator bracket set.

A little late on this topic.

I was a custodial supervisor in a warehouse/assembly plant that made alternators, distributors, and starters. It was a huge facility.
Rows and rows of 30 ft high pallet racks and rows and rows of parts trays all loaded with housings, diodes, washers, screws, brushes, ect.
People all day long pulling parts and dropping some. I could go through every night with a push broom and amass a huge pile of new parts. All trashed.

Anyway, we "made" these parts for GM, Ford, Toyoda, Autozone, Advanced Auto, Pep Boys, ect. All used the exact same parts.
There was no "oh were making alternators for Joe Blow so use the cheap parts". If they were assembling Ford alternators for Autozone, the parts came in Ford boxes.

MOST of the crates of parts were from China, Taiwan, ect. with VERY few made in the U.S. but the assembled units were stamped "PROUDLY MADE IN U.S.A."

We also remanufactured returns. That worked out well for me. I could go through the returns and pick out housing by their code dates and part #s.
I had a 67 GTO and found several rare numbers correct GTO distributor, alts., and starters. As long as I traded for a rebuild able core.
They were fine with that so I would go to the salvage yard or local garage and buy cores for nothing and trade for some real gems.

I worked in a small potato chip factory that made chips for large companies. Same potatoes, same machines. The only thing different were the bags.

Bottom line, you never know where a certain items come from. Often, they may have come from the exact same place in a different box.

My sister worked for A.Z. for a while. One year warranty stuff dies on schedule, always get lifetime warranty.
