Now that several of my 56 Dodge projects are wrapping up I need to be thinking ahead to my next project: A trunk storage box for oil, coolant, spares, etc.

I think I would build it from 1/2" 11 ply birch plywood. Maybe with a partition. Maybe be with a lid. It would sit behind the spare tire in the right fender cavity.

Something like this sketch:

Heres my one Dave http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=62281&...

Perhaps you would consider not to have a spare tire at all? http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=62285&...

Thanks for the ideas Sven. I must have seen your trunk box before because my sketch is much the same as yours.

Not sure about the no spare thing. I've always carried a spare. Now I even have one around my waist.

I use a $5 Harbor Freight tool bag. Then I put it on top of my spare which I mount upside down. The tools won't jostle out of the wheel that way. I have a duplicate set of cheap tools in the 57 Plymouth, the 80 Camaro, and my 91 Volvo. Using Harbor Freight coupons I would doubt if any one of those bags of tools was $25 invested total. Of course, the 99 Crown Vic that broke down on the way back from Florida this week was the one car with zero tools. Oh well.

Mocked up a box for the left side using a cardboard box that my new baby floor jack came in. With a bit of modification, it will work well (in plywood).

It's flat (horizontal) for a bit, then it angles up (following the contours of the trunk). Could make it longer.

For the next mock-up I will use foam board.

The box I made for my Regal. The bottom is notched to lock onto the jack shaft.

Turns out that I didn't have the foam board that I thought I had so I used a piece of corrugated cardboard to figure out the size and shape of the box sides. Then I transferred the cardboard shape to plywood and after testing the plywood piece in the trunk, I used it as a template for the second side. With the second side cut, I played with the width by testing the two sides in the trunk. I decided on 8" between the sides. I then proceeded to cut end pieces and bottoms.

I glued and nailed the pieces together (I was going to use my brad nailer but the compressor regulator failed dramatically (KABLOOIE!!). After testing the box in the trunk, I decided on a baffle to separate tools from liquids, e.g. oil.

I see that I could have made the sides an inch taller but this should work.

Here are some photos following the steps today:
