Hi all, I've had a 57 New Yorker coupe in the shed for some time doing nothing and I'd like to sort out the front brakes. From what I have been able to find out is that it appears to have 60' drums on 57' spindles and without a certain amount of dodgy spacers, the drums seat on too far and rub. I would like to remedy this.

So I figure I can go and do the whole disc conversion thing (ouch for freight) or I can try to maintain originality (might be nice). In any case, before I shop USA, I need to ask if anyone in Oz has some serviceable front drums (with hubs) lying around that they would be interested in selling?

From my meagre understanding of the interchange manual, it looks like any Chrysler & Desoto (56-58) or Dodge (57-58) with 12" brakes should be compatible.

Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers, Ian

1957 Chryslers were C75s or C76s. On that basis, I believe that the front brake drum (and hub) PN is 1732 293, as shown below. While that PN does cross to other Mopar makes, it only crosses into 57 and 58, not 1956.

My parts pdf only goes 1955 to 1958 but on that basis, from what I see below, the 1732 293 12" drum applies to the following:

LP2 = 58 Plymouth (Fury??)
S27 = 57 Desoto Firesweep
LS1 = 58 Desoto Firesweep
LC1 = 58 Windsor
C75 = 57 Windsor/Saratoga
C76 = 57 New Yorker - like yours
LC2 = 58 Saratoga
LC3 = 58 New Yorker

Hopefully somebody with a parts book that goes beyond 1958 will be able to post up what later models used the 1732 293 drum, etc.

'58 Windsors and '57-'58 Firesweeps didn't get 12" brakes. They got 11" brakes. Maybe that was an available upgrade for them? Unless you are talking about Canadian or other export Windsors & Firesweeps, which may be large wheel base cars.
Realistically, you are looking for parts from a '57-'58 large wheelbase Chyrsler/DeSoto. I had thought that '59 was the same too, but not sure. I'm sure John at BigM has these for sale.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen, very informative - I only really looked at the interchange.Yes I would've thought 59 was the same too but it doesn't seem clear but that model range should provide enough salvage options. I may just have to suck it up and ship em' out.

Thanks again for your assistance

Ian, I might have some 12 inch drums around the place somewhere. I suggest emailing me georgelaurie@bigpond.com I could have a few bits and pieces for your 57, George.
