I was wondering if there was a difference between a 1957 desoto power steering box and a 1957 plymouth power steering box. The aluminium coaxial one. Are they the same length etc. Also did 1957 plymouth use a Vickers style pump or were they only eaton and thompson. Thanks

The gears are the same. Just need to change the steering arm at the bottom.

My 57 Chrysler with power steering used the Thompson pump.

I'm putting it in my dodge... Hmm never thought about the Pittman arm. Guess i better check.

Yes. Geometry? I don't remember but it is different! They are splined the same though.

I wonder what the difference is between Type 1 and Type 2. Do they interchange? It seems like they should.

The pitman arm is longer on DeSoto, Chrysler and Imperial. I remember i bought one, wrong ...
Maybe type 2 is for Coaxial pw. steering and type 1 for Constant Control (which has been installed on late 57, according to FSM)

2 pics of the '57 canadian parts manual (no Constant Control steering in it). No info about the "up to" lockwasher
Seems the US parts manaul list only pw steering pitman arm, i don't see the ... 005 and ...983 !

In the 55-58 parts manual there are two sections, one for standard (manual) steering and one for power.
The canadian manual has less numbers because it's a '57 only.
At last there are 8 different pitman arms for 57-58 cars .............

Check the length of the pitman arm to the length of the idler arm. They should be the same length. If not wheels won't be parallel when turning. Jerry
