Expert 5K+ Posts: 8947 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | i'm not seeing how being a hemi requires more effort to prime than a wedge or poly motor . the only real difference is the hemi requires more oil to 4 rockers , instead of 2 . the hemi uses two cam journals 2 and 4 while the wedge and poly uses only uses journal @2 . so 2 rockers versus 4 rockers is the only real difference in priming as is time to pump . i've had to prime some motors as long as a solid minute at @ 1000 rpm to get pickup after rebuild . ones that just set for real long periods with minimal oil still circulated , takes less time ---------------------------------------------------later Edited by 60 dart 2018-08-19 11:50 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | well people get concerned when the heads don't get oil because you must turn the engine over to two specific points... If you turn the engine to fast, you can spend hours not getting oil to the heads... it takes a long time to fill the two rocker shafts and get pressure across both. Just spinning forever... and there are a lot of places to forget to clean 100% so you might be blocked somewhere... which will have very bad consequences. Ive seen the hundreds of inquiries... "why cant I get oil to my rockers on my hemi?"... tons... Did you watch the video? I can simply turn the crank to the specific spot... and prime... turn again... prime... no hooking up a starter, nothing. My first rotation of the engine is lubricated.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9654 Location: So. Cal | I have always just had help to spin the drill, and slowly turned the crank a couple of turns until everything was lubed at the rockers. But now, I don't bother with it. I just prime the oil filter and crank, and let the assembly lube work on the cam & rockers. It'll get enough oil once it starts spinning with the filter & crank fully primed. Most of the problems with the rockers is due to the shafts & holes being plugged up. I make sure they are completely cleaned out before assembly. But it's always good to have more info, so thanks for posting that. Edited by Powerflite 2018-08-20 1:31 AM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8947 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | so the hemi top end only gets fed oil once per revolution of the cam ? ------------------------------------------------later

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | yes, its a single hole per bank. it dribbles a little left and right head, could explain why it takes forever to get oil there. But that's the issue, if you start your car and lets say you have partial blockage on one side? how long do you keep running it before you stop? This will let you know before running it and waiting and potentially doing start up dry damage.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8947 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | but thats not how oil galleries are supposed to work and one should think it takes more than a dribble to feed 4 sets of rockers ---------------------------------------------------------------later

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | eh thats how it works. two rotations per crank rotation, just hits it for a split second. i bet the pressure hits pretty hard up the shaft, so its not a dribble i guess.]

Expert Posts: 3033 Location: N.W. Fla. | As was said, one guy on the crank & one guy on the drill motor. As one SLOWLY turns the crank you'll notice a change in RPM of the drill when you get to the 2 spots where the rockers oil.
