The day the car was struggling home:

1.After one hour of good highway driving,
2.Parked the car for an hour
3.Drove for half an hour at low speed 10-20 mph
4.Back home the engine lost almost all power, went rough and kind of powerless.
All plugs except one was oily and sooty, see pics.

Any opinion/suggestion what could have gone wrong would be very appreciated.
The odometer says 124K, it´s an "untouched" 1961 New Yorker car.

The photo is large enough to see but the cylinder 7 plug looks very white.

A vacuum leak will cause a sparkplug to become white, with ash-forming.
Is the brake-booster connected to the intake manifold near that cylinder? Or maybe the PCV system?
If the booster had a small leak, that cylinder would receive a lean mixture.
The PCV system is a controlled vacuumleak, and should be connected to the base of the carb, to prevent leaning out 1 cylinder.
If the lean cylinder has been happening long enough you could be facing a burned exhaust valve, causing the engine to run bad.

But I hope for you it's just the oily sparkplug making the engine run bad. It could be sucking in a bit of oil through the intake valve seals, or maybe though the intake port if the valley pan gasket is leaky.

Thanks BigBlockMopar, yes the brake booster is connected to intake manifold just near by the cylinder#7 with the white ashlike spark plug
The PCV hose is connected to the carburator. I'll try to start the engine with new sparkplugs NGK 137 from ebay, arriving soon. also check the cylinder compression
it will be interesting to see if there´s a difference in compression between the cylinder #7 and the oily ones.
In case of an engine failure I can "go figure" there will be a challange to me as the layman I am to have an engine overhaul to meet all these accurate specs there are.
I´ll let you know how it goes

Will try to scale up plug pics. Anyway, I´ll get hold of a leakdown tester which seems to be a good option indicating leaks at tdc through rings,
valves and head gasket.
Will I also get an indication of a stuck valve if the piston cycle is in the exhaust position and there´s no blow out
of the exhaust pipe when attaching the tester to the cylinder, is this correct?
If anyone have any tips to get any further in determing rough engine without hoisting out the engine would be helpful
and much appreciated. Thanks Johan

Compression test, once plugs are replaced, start engine and look for vacuum leaks. I'd suspect a leaky connection/ old vacuum hose going to the brake booster or a faulty booster for cylinder 7. Get a vacuum gauge and see what its saying with the engine at normal operating temperature.

Just one fouled/malfunction spark plug will cause a rough powerless engine - change all spark plugs, my guess is that the engine will get back to normal. Then, as suggested, check for vakuum leaks.

Thanks for your input. I´ve cleaned the carburator and "rebuilt" it with a kit, set the mixture screws to 1 1/2 turns out of the bottom,
replaced some vacuum hoses. Also I changed all the spark plugs.
Was prepared for an engine overhaul but then a sigh of relief when the engine started up on all cylinder rather nicely,
yet the fine tuning remains and the how to.
Thanks, Johan

Keep a couple of spare spark plugs in the trunk - my guess is that the one that failed before will be fouled up again, but perhaps only once a season.

Hi Sven, from what I´ve now learned from others that it´s a rather cheap "insurance" to replace the spark plugs,
condensor, breaker, distributor cap and rotor every once a year.
Will check that cylinder with a leak down tester and with a compression gauge, and as well the other cylinders as comparison.
I´ll also get info about what a vaccum gauge will let you know about the engine condition.

Yes, if the car is driven as a daily driver year around it's good maintenance to do that service.

With excesive oil in the combustion chamber even a new spark plug might clog

Use carb cleaner and spray intake mounts, carb base, hose connections and listen for change in idel speeds. That will help you pin point if a vacum leak.
