Working to get a car I drove 31 years ago going again... my dad got the 56 Plymouth Belvedere in the late 80's, restored it... then he moved onto his 57 Plaza and the 56 was parked in the early 90's. Dad's gone and I've taken on the 56 Belvedere re-restoration. My sister & brother in law have the 57 Plaza.

Car sat in a garage (thankfully) for a long time... 1st things on my list were to make sure the engine wasn't seized, it spins freely. Clean all the rust out of the radiator, replace hoses and fluids, and convert to disc brakes...

It'll be fun to drive a car that hasn't run in a long time...

Also, glad I found this site & forums - always great to have a resources when working on cars!

Welcome and good luck with your re-restore! I've got a '56 Plymouth Belvedere myself.

Good luck on the project. I have been working on my '61 since 2014 and there are times I have thought about calling it quits on the car . I am sure some folks here have gotten in to 1 of those moods. I am planning to convert to front disc brakes on the car . I do not trust the 1s I have on it .

Well, I took a bit of a break on working on the car ... looks like 3 years. But back to it this spring.

My progress so far is mostly that I moved it from the my one house to a new house with better access. Got the Hubs separated from the Drums and one side of the disc conversion bolted on. Waiting on a parts order to I can get moving on calipers, rotors and master cylndar.
I found a spare water pump and scheduled to take the radiator in to be patched as it has a leak.

On the plus sides, I did change the oil... and put the oil filter assembly back together correctly. Car does turn over easily, I have the plugs out so it's not going to start.

Hope to have some more positive things to post in the coming weeks and get it on the road by the end of April.

Was thinking today and curious if anyone had run into my dad when he was around... in the Illinois/Tennessee area. John Shannon
This '56 Belvedere I'm working on, and he had a '57 Savoy that he took to shows in the area (My brother in law is redoing that engine)

I use them with the Plymouth hubs, but I have to modify the spacer to center the disc, and move the caliper bracket inward.

Nathan: You're being modest. That is a very clever way around the hub issue. You have posted more details of what you did to accomplish that:

I saw that work by Powerflite in the thread... talking to my friend who does welding on the possibility of that.

If I don't find any 55/56 hubs in the next few weeks will probably go down that path. I don't do welding myself, so have to have the support system pitch in

Thanks for documenting how you took care of that challenge!

Got the 55 Dodge hubs! thanks Big M! Pressed in the studs last night, will get that all mounted up soon.

New brake lines from In-Line Tubes showed up, since all the original ones are rusted through -- not easy getting the old lines out, so that's still work in progress. I haven't put on the new master yet either.
Also still have to get the drivers side rear drum off and the rear Disc conversion kit to show up. Those rusted on rears are a PITA even with the correct puller and a big hammer.

Still doesn't want to start, so, phoned a friend to come help with that process.

Ordered replacement shocks after reading many threads...when with rear MONROE 58496, front: KYB KG5460

Hopefully still on track to be driving in the next month

and I almost forgot to add to my list get new wheels that fit over Disc Brake's ... ones I have, while 15" rims, hit the calipers.
Too bad the extra set of subaru wheels don't fit, that'd been to easy.

Looks like it's coming together well. Your paint looks really good for an old restore.

Found that both rear leaf springs have broken... so got those off and dropping off at a place to have new rear leafs made in Glenwood Springs, Colorado (AlCan Spring)
Still need to drop the fuel tank as it appears to be full of something other than fuel. Not sure what's in it but probably not a bad thing to be going through considering how long the car sat...

Working out where to mount up the rear brake lines as 100% converting to disc, and got all the parts essential done with drivers side bolted up.
I did get new 17" black wheels and tires (225/55r17)..they aren't fancy but I like the look of all black (I got black lug nuts, too)

Learning as I go...

It's 6-8 weeks until the new rear leaf springs come back From AlCan Spring (https://alcanspring.com/), I visited them in Grand Juncton, CO - they enjoyed seeing the older Plymouths leaf spring design. If you have a 56 Plymouth, AlCan has the measurements to create new leaf springs.

have run into an issue, I buggered up the threads on the rear axle nut when I was pulling the hubs off, have looked around but not finding what replacement axle nut I could get? Anyone know that off the top of their heads?

Was going to try and run thread cutting/chaser through like every other nut and bolt I take off, but, I don't have the correct size for that axle nut.

Thanks for any help!

3/4-16 for threads on the rear axle nut.
Was able to get the correct tap to fix it; good to have friends with extensiver tool boxes than I.

I had to remove the gas tank and get it sent out for restoration... Using Moyer Tanks in PA... (http://www.gas-tank.com/) just shipped the tank out.
It was full of gunk.
Hopefully this is the last item that will be shipped off to be fixed...
Brakes are all on, haven't connected new brake lines though.

It's slow process sometimes as I'm distracted by my other Rambler 500 project car that needed a 3" lift.

FYI, new gas tanks are available on Ebay for around $350.
