Older (pre '57) 8-3/4 diffs will not fit into the true 8-3/4 ('57 and later) axle housing. The axle housing has a different bolt pattern for the carrier, the axles have different splines, and the axle bearings are all different. I've been looking for the pinion seal for my '56 Imperial and can't find a source. It's 2 5/8 ID x 3 1/2 OD. Can anyone send me to a lead? TY.

You may have to look up your part by size, sounds like you've already disassembled and measured? I'd look on SKF's website for a seal in the size you need, order it and see if it matches. These seals are usually pretty cheap.

Another option is to go to Andy Bernbaum, I've had good luck with them. Here is a link to their site, they list the seal at $35 plus shipping. Expensive, but I'm willing to bet it will be correct.

As a fellow '56 Imperial owner, I'm curious about your car. What body style? Which trans? What kind of condition is it in?

Going by the dimensions you gave (2.625" X 3.500"), the following CR seals should work; 26177, 26186, 26189, 26190, 26191.

26191 and 26190 are .438" wide, the others are .375" wide.

26186, 26190 and 26192 are the 2-lip design.

THIS IS WHY ONLY ONE POST ONE TOPIC IS THE WAY TO GO.

663 602 has NOTHING!!!!!!!! to do with a C73.

At best it is a 1404 504. Google 1404504 (no space) and see what *you* come up with.

While not convinced that you really need a 2.625" x 3.50" seal, I found an SKF 26177 with those dimensions.

You're welcome

Same number I posted in my original reply but those dimensions are suspicious, not a typical pinion seal configuration.
