Ok I have a 4 spd side loader and it bolts to a 383/440. Can anyone try to tell me what this thing is or if it is simply an a-833 or what ever. It is the transmission that was in my '60 fury when I got the car, bolted to an engine block but no cross member or clutch set up. The numbers on the cover side are "C956642" and below (probably the production date?) 12-28. On the other side they are- on top the #4 below C965614, next to the 4 there is raised triangle with 3 dots, 1 at each point, goofy clock?

I have always wondered what this transmission is. When I got the car when I got the chance to pull the block and put an engine in I found the throw out bearing guide snout was busted off and welded back on to the front bearing retainer. I found another 4 spd with the bearing retainer and correct bolt holes, but had to have the outer rim turned down in order for the bearing retainer to seat in the front of the trans case. I was told once it was chrysler muncie transmission and also it is a Chrysler type 5. The shift is a hurtz with the little white pool cue ball.

Any help would be appreciated. Also if anyone has a complete brake and clutch assembly for a '60 fury 2dr hard top I am willing to adopt and provide a warm and loving home for it, lol. But yeah I do an assembly.

The raised casting numbers aren't much use for ID but what you describe sounds like an 833 (a pic would be nice). The front bearing retainer comes in 3 different diameters and 2 bolt patterns. More info here:

Thank you. Well my bearing retainer is just over 4" 7/5" and the front shaft is only an 18 spline. This thing has a big clutch too. Really making me wonder if what I was told years is true. That the transmission and rear end wear built for a 426 hemi car. But again thank you.

The Mopar 4 speed (833) with the 18 spline input is indeed the HD unit that was behind the 426 hemi and I believe also the 440 magnum. All of the other 833s had a 23 spline input shaft. Chrysler did use a Borg Warner T-10 4 speed one year only in 63 but that is most likely not what you have.

The mid-sized bearing retainer is 4.80" so, along with the 18-spline input, definitely an 833.
