Is there anyone that can repair or rebuild a voltage regulator? The original regulator in my '55 Dodge has gone out...

(KMLifestyle was suggested, but they don't answer their e-mails and their phone is no longer in service, http://www.mykmlifestyle.com/)

Doubt that rebuilding is worth it. They are available on eBay (New Old Replacement Stock, etc.)

$30

Thank you, but this is a very original car and I'd like to either keep the original regulator or buy a NOS one. As of now, I don't see a NOS or used original one on e-bay.

You're not helping us help you when you don't tell us what your car is. There are at least four 6V pos ground regulators listed for the 1955 cars. Autolite was an OE supplier. I can find some of the as NOS on eBay, like this 1343 124:

https://www.ebay.com/p/NOS-Vintage-Autolite-8-77-Voltage-Regulator-6...

Or these 1641 510s:

Help us help you and give us a hint

Sorry for the confusion, I was thinking that all the '55 Dodges used the same six volt positive ground regulator. The part number I need is 1641510. I've already searched
for it, no luck on e-bay.

I was hoping someone could rebuild/repair it.

Not sure how hard you tried. I just Googled 1641510 and came up with several options (remember Autolite was the OE supplier and Hudson, Studebaker and Packard also used the same OE supplier).

Also a 1343 122 would likely work:

Here is a very inexpensive rebuilt one that you could buy and just swap your existing cover onto:

The 1641 510s:

And this:

And this:

Thank you, D500Boy, I saw those others.

Agreed, any of those would work and I may go that route if I cannot find the OEM Autolite 1641510 with the part number sticker on the top. There was one of those 1641510 regulators with the sticker on e-bay, but it had already sold.

I was at my New Old Stock Mopar Parts guy this afternoon and I told him that you were looking for a 6V regulator for your 55. I just emailed him tonight to check to see if he has a 1641 510.

Ron W. got back to me this AM. Unfortunately, his answer was "Sorry. I don't have that one".

Those old regulators are mechanical and the internals can be cleaned and adjusted. If you remove the black cover, you will find three sets of points - cut out relay, current regulator, voltage regulator. They probably need to have the points cleaned and reset the gaps. If you have a service manual it will have complete instructions on what to do. Failing that, if there is an auto electric firm in your area they might be able to help. Like mechanical voltage regulators, auto electric shops are getting rare.

Cars with alternators only have the voltage regulator points in the unit.

Good idea Bill. I am embarrassed to say that I never thought of that. I was focussed on trying to find him a new/rebuilt 6V regulator.

That said, there is a 55-56 Plymouth service manual that has a section on Generating System that includes the regulator and how to tweek it.

That can be had by downloading the manual from:

http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109

Saving the pdf and then going to around page 95/446 or specifically to page 103/446 to the start of the regulator section:

There's a place in New Castle PA (Strobel's) that reworked mine, and I'm sure could handle yours. https://strobelsalternatorservice.com/
