Visited a old closed yard today. There is a 58 shopper wagon there for $2000 firm. It has a motor but I couldn't get the hood open. He told me that it had a newer big block in it. I'm sure it has some rust problems. He doesn't want sell any parts. Just the whole car. PM me for details and I will put you in touch. He didn't want his number given out.

Thanks for the heads up.

For future consideration, iPhone .jpeg photos do NOT upload here. They have to be .jpg (no "e") to work.

This might be dumb question, but how do I do that? I was able to post pics here when I first joined ? Then it changed? I have about a 100 more pics to post from the closing yard.

I don't take .jpeg files (I have a Sony digital camera) but I do use a free software called IrfanView that will to it. Just now I opened your first photo with Irfanview and then saved it as a .jpg. Now I am going to try uploading it. If I am successful, you'll see the moldy wagon body (needs a good pressure wash for sure).

Here is the link to the Irfanview download: https://www.irfanview.com/

This is for Windows only.

File Explorer -> View -> Options -> Change folder and search options -> View -> UNCHECK 'Hide extensions for known file types' -> OK

Then select ".jpeg" file in Explorer and hit F2. Rename it to whatever name and take "e" off from the .jpeg extension, as .jpg, then hit Enter -> "Are you sure?" -> YES.

If you have a newer iPhone or iPad and/or IOS software, the photos get automatically saved as jpeg, no way to change that. Keep that in mind. I primary use an iPhone and have the same issue.

Just because they are saved as .jpegs, it doesn't mean that you can't change them with the aid of a software to .jpg so they can be active after uploading to this forum.

That said, with the iPhone, etc. being so common, maybe it would be beneficial if the forum was changed to accept .jpegs as well as .jpgs. Surely a forum moderator could get this done or knows somebody who could?

Correct, but if you only have an iPhone or iPad then you can change them on a desktop or laptop. I used to post alot of photos on here, but now it’s not just uploading them as before. I think many on here are now on the Facebook group. Though this forum has a good layout that you don’t get on Facebook.

Sure. But could somebody find them next week or next year. Complete chaos over there. Awful.

Here there is organization and places to put things.

A Firesweep is MORE common than a Fireflite.
So for me is NOT super rare, just common.

Desoto made 1300 6 passenger and 1100 9 passengers in 58. How can these not be super rare? I vaguely recall seeing 1 58 Desoto wagon for sale before, in all the years I've been looking for one.

There have been no less than ten 58 Firesweep wagons posted to
this album, for sale, over the past ten years, maybe less. If a person
wants a 58 Firesweep wagon, they are out there. If you have only seen
one, you aren't looking hard enough, or you are picky and want a mint
one for dirt cheap.

Now, a Fireflite ... that's a whole different enchilada. Only 3-4 are
known to survive, and they ARE rare !

Seriously? 10 cars and 10 years means its "available"? That's one heck of a rare car by any standard. For Fireflites, 3-4 is not rare. It is unobtainable.

I guess we have different standards for the term "rare".

It took me YEARS to acquire my DeSoto convertible, picking up several
Firedomes and Sweeps in the process, just because they "were there" and
might be needed for parts or (?) when I finally did get the car I wanted.
On a tip from another car guy, I found a black and gold Adventurer in a
wrecking yard back east. Rusted into pieces and stripped of almost all its
special parts, all I was really buying was a set of tags, a convertible wind-
-shield frame, an X-member, and what was left of the top well tub. Six years
on, I had an OEM correct rolling chassis and convertible body, and had collected
almost all the parts to finish the car. In the search for those parts, I contacted
the owner of the Fireflite I currently own, and later bought that car when he
decided to sell and sold the Adventurer project.

To me, this is what defines "rare", .... tirelessly working and networking the
hobby contacts to scare up the truly rare car. Cars that just "come up for sale
from time-to-time", while certainly not the stuff of Ford-Chevy fodder, certainly
aren't common. But they are a far cry from those one may never find, even
when spending endless hours and thousands of dollars chasing ghosts.

I want to find a 1961 Ford Starliner with the 406, tri-power, 4-speed drivetrain.
Missed the chance 40 years ago. Low miles black car with red interior. Even
some Fords are rare.

Another thought .... make it known to EVERYONE that you want a 58
DeSoto wagon. 1000 eyes and brains on the alert will only help your
search. It's how I found my 58 Plaza. Another impossible-to-find car,
even if they made a lot of them. But I made it known and one of our
members here alerted me of the exact car I was after that was listed
on eBay. So a guy in Spokane tells "the world" he wants this specific
car. A guy in Quebec sees a listing, tells the guy from Spokane (then
deployed to a remote camp in AFG) about it, AFG/Spokane guy buys
the car out of Arizona, has it hauled to California by another FL member,
and then has it brought back to Spokane !

How's that for crazy networking ?

That's the best advice you can offer, if you want something specific let everyone know what you are looking for, that's what I've done to find a 60 New Yorker 2 Door Hardtop (if anyone knows of one!). I found my grandfathers original farm tractor he bought in 1937 a couple of years ago purely by talking to everyone and anyone who would listen, eventually we spoke to the right person who knew someone and after a few years negotiating bought it back and restored it. If they built it there is a chance you can find it.

I'm no expert on 58 DeSoto wagons ,but this the only one I have seen in person. I would imagine a combined build rate of 6 and 9 passenger wagons of less than 2500 as at least hard to find? The survival rate would be what percent of that? All as I know that this wagon catches my eye. That why I posted it. I would happy to get this wagon myself and watch it artfully rust away in my front yard, but I have too much of that going on already. The car crusher won't care if it's rare ,just that it's heavy. I have had more requests for the yard owners number than I thought asking question s about the wagon. I only looked it over for about 10-15 mins. The dash is removed and in the rear deck area. It had a luggage rack but was removed. I could not get the hood open but the yard owner told me it had a later BBmopar engine in it. Most of the rare wagon only trim seemed to be there. As far as rust the floorboards from what I can see are what I would call fish scale rusty. Without any major structure rust. There were however some random pin holes here and there. I did not open the tailgate to check out the rear deck area. interior and door panels are trashed. My overall opinion of the wagon is its savable ,but a major project.! Condition is somewhere between really good parts car to #5 This is not my car, im not middlemaning it. I'm not flipping it. I told yard owner that I would try to find a good home for it. The yard owner in his mid 80s does not want to answer the phone, does want picture collectors asking him to jack up the car and take 20 pics of the underside . He has zero patience for low ballers saying I will I will give 300 bucks for because your just going to crush it anyways. He has the personality of Darnel from Christine. I'm giving out his number in order as people PMed me about it. I will be going out there in a few days and check on it again

Should anyone want a luggage rack, I have one that I will not be
using. I do not have the roof rub rails that keep said luggage from
scratching the paint. Just the rack. A hard to find part. Some might
call it "rare" !

Jaja Sid,

.......what I like to say is, that a 57/58 Firesweep wagon is more often on the market in compare to a 57/58 Fireflite wagon.
For your information, yes I live in the second universe, I own two DeSotos, and one of them is a Fireflite Wagon.

That does not make a Firesweep wagon "common". There are cars that are 1 of 1 or 2, that does not make a FI FL "common". And I own 4 FL's and because I see them each time I look out of the window, it does not make them "common".

Im beginning to see now. If you take these 3 that were found 12 years ago and ad the 10 that were found over a 10 year period, then through in a few 57s plus the one I posted. That's a grand total of 15 !!!! I agree now VERY common.

Owner of yard passed away.
Liquidator of yard sold the wagon for $500 I believe. It was saved!
I bought 3 62 chryslers,64 dodge 880 coupe,64 imperial,61 imperial.
Sad to say, about 400 50s-70s were crushed. Mostly 58-66 thunderbirds and caddys

OK, here is the famous 880 vulture asking about parts. Are you gonna save the 880 or part it out?

The car is borderline save/part! Was trying to sell it whoie before having to bring it home.
I had to bring it home and will part it out now. I'm keeping some of the parts that interchange with my 61s.
I have sold a few parts already. PM me with what you need?
I do have the steering wheel you were asking about, but it's not very good.
