Hello,

I am looking to replace the rear end in my 1956 Dodge Royal Lancer. I have done a little research and in measuring the flange to flange distance using a mopar rear axle spotters guide I discovered that a 1962-1970 8 3/4 rear end would fit my car perfectly with a little adjustment to the spring purchases. Does anyonw know somewhere where I could find one of these for cheap? I am only 16 trying to build this car using my own money so spending over $1,000 on a new rear end is something I would love to avoid.

I will attach the spotters guide incase anyone needs it.

That's not an incredibly accurate chart. 1966/67 B body rear is narrower than a 1968-70 B body rear. If you need exact measurements it's best to measure, or get a more accurate chart.

Do you have a more accurate chart I could use?

I made one up that is much better and includes a lot more info on it, but I would have to dig it up. The bottom line is that a '65-'67 B-body axle is the best swap for you. '68-'70 B-body will work too, but just a little wider. Cut off your old perches and weld them to the new axle at 41" separation. The old perches are really narrow, and you need them like that to fit your springs well. Although '62-'64 B-body is the right width, you probably don't want to deal with the older brakes and tapered hubs on them.

But your question about getting a replacement axle is completely pointless without knowing where you live. That's why we put our location on our ID so we don't have to ask you where you are. The shipping cost for these would negate any benefit of getting it cheaper. The best place to get them is your local Craigslist or automotive swapmeet.

I made a little write up on it in the thread on my car. You can see it here. Look at the 10th picture down the page.

That's an understatement, that chart should be banned from the WWW. The info in this link is much more accurate:

I installed a '70 B-body rear end in my '56 Plymouth and I had to move both spring perches about 3/8" for a perfect fit. They were fairly common when I was looking for one a few years ago, and I paid $75 for a good one about thirty miles from my house.

3/8" is the wrong number. It should have been 1.5" each side or 3" total. This is a picture of mine with the new mounts being welded in place, and part of the old mounts still there.

Hmmm. The '70 B-body spring centers are 44", the '56 FL are 41" so, yes, 3 inches difference.

Interesting! Then mine had to be something other than a 70, though the seller said it was. Before I bought it, I measured the pads and total width on my '56 and asked him to measure his before I made the trip. That was a few years ago, so I don't recall what the numbers were, but I brought both rear ends to the local welder and he relocated the mounts. When I dropped the body in place, the mounts were within 1/8" of perfect, and when I look at the old weld spots, they are slightly more than 1/4" from the original B-body welds.

I guess I don't know the answer, but it fits great.

When measuring the spring centers with the rear end removed, the springs can relax either inboard or outboard so the measured centers aren't the true centers. What makes the '55-'56 unique is the "splayed" spring installation. IOW, the spring centers are wider at the front than the rear.

Other way around John. They are wider at the rear.

Hm without measuring anything the '68 rear end bolted right into the spring perches of my '60 fury. The shocks I put in were gabriel high jackers out of '72 Duster drag car. Things still hold pressure today.

Gabriel hijackers are good, reliable air shocks. Monroe air shocks are garbage.
