I am thinking strongly about abandoning the 12" x 2.5" Chrysler Windsor front brakes on my 56 Dodge D500 Custom Royal.

I am finding that the adjustment is just too finicky and, in moist weather, either the lining is absorbing moisture or the drum(s) is rusting. Bottomline: my left front is locking up, just backing the car out of the garage to work on the car outside. I've had to back the adjustment off so much to avoid the locking that now the brakes feel terrible. I am hoping to find a conversion that uses 11 3/4" 73(ish) Chrysler rotors to stick with the D500 = Chrysler brake theme and whatever caliper but doesn't need the spindle machined to work (I want to have the conversion 100% reversible).

I've talked to Roger at AAJ but I think he was talking 73 Dodge Dart 11" rotor. I've also (today) contacted Scarbird and Rusty Hope. Nothing back from them yet.

Here is an old post by rbmain that explains to me why it was easy for the factory to give the 56 D500 option cars the larger Chrysler Windsor brakes:

"The 55-56 Dodge-Plymouth have three bolt spindles, in other words three bolts are used to hold the backing plate, brake anchors and steering arm to the spindle. Very few disc brake conversion systems are compatible. But, the 56 Desoto and Chrysler spindles use four bolts, and the disc conversion systems are more readily available. Here's the novel part, the 56 Chrysler and Desoto spindle assemblies including the supports and kingpins will bolt into a 55-56 Dodge Plymouth at the upper and lower outer pivots at the ends of the control arms. Here's photos of a 56 Chrysler spindle assembly bolted to the ends of the control arms in a 56 Plymouth."

If you call AAJ and specify what you are wanting, he will tell you that he has a 12" rotor brake setup for the '56 Dodge. As far as converting to a Chrysler spindle first, I am not sure how that really helps you if you want to convert to disc. Scarebird conversions use Probe rotors which are around 10.4", so they are actually smaller than the standard AAJ kit. But AAJ does have a 12" version too. You just have to ask him for it. Of course, you won't be able to run 14" wheels anymore if you do this.

My 56 Dodge Custom Royal D500 already has the Chrysler Windsor 12" x 2.5" brakes on Chrysler uprights and four bolt spindles. I was asking about 56 Chryslers because that is really what I have, not the smaller 3 bolt spindles. I was hoping for someone with a 56 Chrysler that has made the switch using AAJ, Scarebird or Rusty Hope. I just discovered Rusty Hope today but I knew about Scarebird. Neither Rusty Hope or Scarebird seem to list specific 56 Chrysler Windsor or Desoto applications.

I have 15" wheels so no problems there. I have talked to Roger but he was talking 73 Dodge Dart 11" rotors. I was thinking that to be true to the original intent of the original 56 D500 package, a change to front discs should involve Chrysler discs (like 11.75" rotors from a 73 Chrysler) not the 11" rotors from Dart.

I just emailed Roger (again to start a 11.75" discussion).

What I have at the moment:

I wouldn't be too concerned about 11 or 11 3/4 inch rotors. Both are going to be a big upgrade over stock drums. The main difference is going to be how much heat they can handle. both sizes have been used on trucks with success so no need to worry. The stopping is very dependent on your tires having good traction. Next order of business is how available the replacement parts are. Having over the counter brake parts is golden compared to special order or long wait times etc. I did a conversion on a 57 imperial and it uses ford rotors that were used for somewhere around 20+ years on their half ton pickups. Getting them cheap and anywhere is awesome. Pick your battles.
