I just picked up the 56 D500 315 hemi air cleaner that I bought a week or so ago on eBay. It's going to be restored to factory spec and kept for car shows, etc. probably not actually run.

I started the restoration process today by stripping off all the old red paint. (I have factory red paint and a new sticker for it already). There is maybe one dint on the top that I will attend to. Or not. Otherwise, it will be sanding, primer, and paint. (I'm keeping the relatively ragged edge on the inner part of the center section untouched).

My question is "Does anybody know the part number for the rubber gasket that seals the center section to the main air cleaner body?".

I was surprised to find that gasket there to be honest. Unfortunately it is twisted and most likely will not take kindly to being forced flat again. It is flat and roughly 7.5" OD and 7.0" ID (i.e. it's about 1/4" wide). I'm not sure but the part number might be 1535 887 but I really can't tell. I search on "1535887 Dodge gasket" but nothing relevant turned up.

Here are some photos from today including photos of the unfortunately twisted and unlikely to straighten out gasket, both loose and in place.

With a 7.5" OD, that is a good alternative if I can't find a NOS one. Thanks.

Another question:

I am surprised that I am going to be obsessed by this:

I thought the "oil bath" sticker on my "New" 56 D500 air cleaner was going to be a normal generic one. Now I see that it might not be true.

There was a partial part number still visible, i.e. 1639 1?? on the sticker yesterday before I started stripping the paint off (luckily I took a photo so I knew where to place the sticker when I am done repainting the air cleaner).

When I searched the 55-58 Mopar Parts catalog for 1639 1, the only hit that made sense was 1639 126 which is the PN for the air cleaner meaning that the oil bath air cleaner instructions were specific (somehow) to that air cleaner. Oh oh.

Now I am going to be obsessed to find at the very least a good photo of that sticker (in good condition).

Anybody?

Here are some photos, starting with a generic sticker that I thought that I was going to use:

Here you go Dave F. This is the only picture I could find on my computer of mine, I will try to get you a better one later. Although the D500's were red and the Super Powered Cars had black air cleaners, my research says they carried the same number. The '56 Power Pack Plymouths and Furys did the same thing despite the color differences too.

Thanks Dave. The Parts list above agrees with what you are saying that 1639 126 was the Dodge 4 bbl power pack air cleaner. However, it must of have been interesting picking parts out of the 1639 126 bin ("Do mean the black 1639 126 or the red 1639 126?") ("Who's on First?)

That *could* explain the red air cleaner on this very original Detroit-built 56 Custom Royal 315 Poly power pack (not a D500) car (photos courtesy of George B.):

I found this 1637 697 one. Not correct but the same format as DepsilonD's 1639 126.

I guess I could turn the 1637 697 one into a 1639 126 (1st attempt, font and spacing issues to be fixed):

Because I am a hands-on DIY kind of guy, not a check book restorer. Thanks.

This is another attempt from yesterday using the eBay photo as the base and recreating ALL the text. I have a new 1637697 sticker now that will scan and use it as the base in the coming days.

Yeah, I believe the tall decal with black in the center was used on the 2bbl air cleaners, whereas the shorter, longer decal with the orange in the center was used on the 4bbl air cleaners due to the limited space available to place it on there. My question is if the '56 Fury used this decal or not. I've haven't seen a picture with one on it, but then again, it's extremely hard to find an untouched Fury air cleaner.

Can't directly answer your question Nathan but there is good evidence that you are correct about the orange vs black centers and tall vs long decals.

I think that the Fury 4 bbl air cleaner would have a long narrow orange center decal with the PN 1639 065.

As shown above in this thread, an OE 56 Dodge D500 red 4 bbl oil bath air cleaner came with a long narrow orange decal with PN 1639 126.

I think that 56 Dodge 4 bbl Power Pack black oil bath air cleaner with sticker PN 1637 697.

I think that a 2 bbl 56 Dodge D63-1 (Coronet with a 270 poly) would have a sticker with PN 1557 314.

I thought all Texans were 4bbl 315 Polys and as such should (??) have the long narrow orange center decal with 1637 697.

Sorry that this doesn't directly answer your question, just hints at the potential answer: "56 Furys might have had a 1639 065 sticker"

Good luck finding an unmolested 56 Fury gold air cleaner.

As a follow-up to the above, I found these two 56 Fury engine bay photos in my archives (one with an orange center long narrow sticker and one without).

It looks like what I said about the 2bbl vs. 4bbl decals isn't quite right, at least for 1956. This is the original air cleaner on my '56 Savoy. The decal is more like the 4bbl decal, but the background on it is clear, or maybe it's just the little words that stick onto it.
