Elite Veteran Posts: 963 Location: San Antonio, TX | I think this is a page out of a dealer book. Is there an online resource for the rest of it? I searched this site without luck. I'm primarily interested in trim code 543 which is what my 4dr hdtp is. Thanks (dealerbook.JPG) Attachments ---------------- dealerbook.JPG (122KB - 132 downloads)

Elite Veteran Posts: 963 Location: San Antonio, TX | Thanks. Is Bob on this forum? It would be awesome to see some scans from the book. I'm curious what two-tone colors were recommended for the 543 trim. Can't quite read them from the pic in the earlier thread. Although it looks like a long list. Which makes sense since 543 is a predominately white interior. It should go with most colors. Here's something I got that is supposed to be 543. Elite Veteran Posts: 963 Location: San Antonio, TX | Yes that is the 543 trim. One thing I'm not sure about though is the seams on the white vinyl. The original door panels I have are heat seams. Were the the original seats heat seamed or stitched like this one??? Edited by macedon 2018-11-18 8:09 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | Heat seams. Those pleats are just like the '57 Windsor pleats that are also heat seamed.

Elite Veteran,, James Passed away March 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1028 Location: Melbourne, Australia | Id have to disagree Nathan , the door panel horizontal lines you can see are definitely HF welded , but the seats are sewn black stitching from what ive ever seen on 57 Fireflites (I may be wrong) . If they were HF welded the seams would be the same colour as its just a depression , not black as these are which is the thread colour from a sewing machine . Ive had some experience using HF welders before . Kool stuff . Funny enough on 57 Adventurer door panels the vertical lines are sewn , where as you would have thought they would be HF welded or should be I think !

Elite Veteran Posts: 963 Location: San Antonio, TX | I've only seen pictures of the seats. Mine were long gone when I bought the car. This picture from Ed's site based on the wear looks to be an original set. It certainly appears to be stitched. The other interesting thing to note: there isn't an embossed logo like the illustration. Hmmm... the fog of 60+ years. I'm absolutely... not sure. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | I agree that the restored car in the picture appears to have them stitched, but that doesn't surprise me. The picture in the brochure doesn't appear to be the same though, and I would bet is heat seamed. Sewing lines like that is VERY expensive for a manufacturer to do, compared to the heat seams and it is unlikely that they would do it unless they had no other alternative. Even the top of the line New Yorker had heat seams for its pleats. Additionally, it appears that the DeSoto door panels are sewn, but they actually aren't! They are heat seamed with a pattern that looks like a sewn thread. It could be that they used this same sewn thread looking heat seam to do the seats with. That is probably the reason that restorers choose to sew them instead of getting a heat seam done for it.

Elite Veteran Posts: 963 Location: San Antonio, TX | I am reasonably certain that I have a set of unrestored door panels that left the factory as 543 trim. Reasonably. Here's a close up of the heat seamed pleat. As far as the seats go I actually like the look of the heat seamed pleats better. I don't prefer the contrasting dark stitching. Time will tell which way I decide to go. I've looked and there are some sources of 1 inch heat pleated vinyl. Mostly marine suppliers, but that's ok they charge 1/3 of what SMS does. I'll order some swatches and see what looks best. (dpclose.JPG) Attachments ---------------- dpclose.JPG (118KB - 148 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | Cool, do they have a 3/4" pattern too? The New Yorker uses the 3/4", while the '57 Windsor uses the 1" pattern. On the Windsor & New Yorker, the spacing is different on the door panels. The door panels have a 5/8" pattern on them. So be aware that the door panels may not be the same as the seats. You would expect the seat pattern to have the largest spacing, but the '58 Windsor uses a 1/2" horizontal pattern on it, so they changed it up quite a bit. Veteran Posts: 236 Location: Morgan Hill, CA | Looking forward (or should I say Forward Looking) for more info on this topic. I'm trying to compile more info on what should be stitched and what should have the heat seams. Ive searched and looked at hundreds of photos. My car is a different code (642) but so far it appears the door panels and the back of the seats are heat stamped. The verdict is not yet in on whether or not the front of the seats are stitched. I have come to the conclusion that most seats when redone lose the original square shape....seems most shops these days want to round of the seat cushions. The pictures attached are original except the centers might have been replaced. I've received a shipment of correct fabric from SMS but have yet to install it. Notice both front and back have the embossed Desoto emblem which SMS can also do. One other thing I've noticed from that 57 Desoto Fabric book is that you may be looking at different color codes but many of them use the same base color. So code 642, 542, 515 etc may all have the same color green but the fabric book makes them different. I think it may have to do with the way the photos were taken and different lighting and photo angles. I was driving myself crazy trying to find the right shade of green. The SMS color samples did not match the pictures from the fabric book so I went and saw Big M. We managed to find several samples and they proved to be a very close match to what SMS had sent me. We found original door panels and seats and the parts not exposed to sun showed their original unfaded color. You can take a picture of the original material and the SMS sample and it is a dead on match.....then take a picture from another angle and have it look completely different. What looks dark green one way looks light green from another angle. Based on what I saw I ordered what I needed to do my interior. Elite Veteran,, James Passed away March 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1028 Location: Melbourne, Australia | The rear faces of the Front seat are clearly HF welded as mentioned and as you can see the pressings a just depressions in the same colour , the front faces cant be HF welded as you can clearly see the black stitching , you cant heat seal in black stitching ! I agree though if I had the chance I would love the faces HF welded . I think that the very reason they didnt HF weld them as they wanted that contrasting coloured thread . The sales brochure is just a sketchy rendering . Ive seen the original sewing machines and even legendary auto trim have them , they have 10-15 needles that sew the pre adjusted sew lines all at once , so its quicker than heat pressing . They aren't silly these cars companies . The fireflite door panels as I said you can see have HF welded lines as shown , but I am sure ive seen adventurer ones and the lines on them are sewn and run vertically on the door panels . I am baffled why these weren't HF Welded on adventurers. Probably die to the low volume they didnt want to have to make up a brass HF tool to do just a few cars maybe ?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | This is a picture of the vertical seams on my Firedome door panels. They look like they are stitched, but upon closer inspection you can see that they are heat seamed. The "Thread" part has vinyl patterning on them and there is no thread on the backsides. Elite Veteran,, James Passed away March 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1028 Location: Melbourne, Australia | Yes they used a combination of traditional sewing and HF welded in many different areas , the 58 firedomes are HF welded verytically , but I am still telling you those 57 fireflite seat faces are sewn with black thread not welded , and 57 adventurer door panels are sewn . Ive been lucky enough to have been to the place where they do the HF tooling and they have brass plates that make the sew lines look real . Here is what a brass plate tool looks like to put those fake sew lines in ! Very expensive to make Edited by The Adventurer 2018-11-23 7:42 PM (2 - Copy.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 2 - Copy.jpg (236KB - 136 downloads)

Elite Veteran Posts: 963 Location: San Antonio, TX | It's interesting to note that in 1958 De Soto decided just to say that all two tone colors are reversible. Saved on ink I guess. For example in 1957 the book lists X-C-X and C-X-C. In 1958 it just lists X-C-X and says all two tone colors are reversible. Edited by macedon 2018-11-26 8:04 AM
