I've got a car that the rear of the body is a 1958 Plymouth two door hardtop. Anybody run a bigger tire size on these??
I saw a 1958 Dodge with a 275/50/15, I've seen pics claiming 295/50/15 on the rear. I'm not worried about wheels and backspacing for now, just wondering how big of a tire guys have gotten under a 1957/1958 Plymouth 2 door hardtop.

I've measured and it seems a 275/60/15 will fit if on an 8" rim no problem, and it looks like a 295/50/15 will fit under the car too with a bit of room to the spring and a bit of room to the outer wheel can. Anybody ever actually done it?? Thanks

Just for reference, here are the OE wheel sizes and corresponding factory tire sizes for the 55 -58 cars. Wheel sizes depended on the brake size and the tire size depended on the wheel size so really, the tire sizes depended on the factory brake sizes. See below.

I am running 235/75/15 on 15" 85 Dodge Diplomat cop car wheels and there is some rubbing on the front frame on full lock. I had to trim out some of the rear wheel lip to get the clearance at the back.

The police car wheels were 6 slotted 15x7" steel wheels with 4.5" bolt circles and typically came with Goodyear F32 P215/70 R15 tires. REF: https://www.dippy.org/upgrade/dipcop.html

Just sayin'.

I really like those TorqThrusts on the Fury.

I like the look of the Fury above too. Gorgeous IMO.

I have 215/75/14 on the front now. Brakes won't affect me, I'm going Wilwoods front and back. I have wheels I believe will fit nicely. If ANY of my measurements are off...? I'll swap wheels. Swap rears. Whatever it takes.
I want a tire that MIGHT hook out back. A 275/60/15 or 295/50/15 is what I'm trying for size wise for a street tire, then I'll grab something sticky for the track.
Just wonder if anybody has actually tossed a wider tire under the rear...? Doesn't seem like many have?

Didn't you already ask this question?
http://forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=68797

To answer it the way you've framed it this time, yes many people have put big tires under FL cars. You've already been shown a few examples in the 275-width range with off the shelf wheels and radial tires and zero modifications to the car itself. You can probably get a 10" wide wheel and 295 under it with some careful measuring, but you'll probably still be scraping the frame/fenderwell or bodywork on angled driveways. It's important to know if you're going to be at stock height, lowered, or raised, because this radically changes the likelihood the tires will touch the things around them.

There is also a big difference in tire size and shape between the tires you say you'll run. A standard radial tire (bulgey sidewall, wide contact patch) versus a repro bias ply tire (squared shoulder, narrow contact patch) versus a drag bias ply or drag radial tire. You also said you will be running Wilwood brakes, and are willing to swap wheels and rear ends to make it all work. It's hard to make a "max size" recommendation when you haven't ruled out any changes to the car. The sky's the limit!

User earleebob did the muscle-era Mopar trick of moving the leaf springs inboard of the framerails to easily fit 10" wide wheels and a big radial with plenty of room to spare on his '57 Fireflite:

My suggestion? Get your "dream" wheels and tires, and then make a list of the changes you'll need to make them fit.

I did sort of, but got no replies about a 1957 or 1958 Plymouth, so I tried again! A little more specific this time...!!!!

My brakes and rear end selection won't matter to anybody, I'm just looking for larger size tires on a 1957/58 Plymouth body. I've had way more luck Googling than here honestly! I'll ask and see if any responses, but it's no problem to me to just measure and fit myself.
I'm doing exactly what you posted, wheels are bought, I'll swap around to center the wheels perfectly in my space and go from there. Not much help in here yet but thought I would ask anyways!

Sorry to semi-hijack this thread but while putting the patio furniture away (finally), I saw my 56 Dodge D500 wheels that I have stored under the deck. So I measured them.

These ones (showing their original white paint colouring):

They are 5.5" across the bead which makes sense for a 56 D63 Dodge with 12" (Windsor) brakes according to the parts manual. This further implies that the original tires would have been 7.60 x 15. I think when I got the car the tires were H78 or G78 with the spare being an L78. L78 translates to 235/75/15 which is what I am running now.

Welllll....... I'm gonna start with these.
15x7 with 4" backspace and 215/70/15 on the front.
15x8 with 4.25" backspace and 255/60/15 on the rear.

My brother bought the 295s but I have to swap rears before I see if I can tuck them in......

Thanks!!! I'm trying for a SORT OF period correct looking wheel.
I'm doing the same with the colors. A couple of my buddies are wincing, they want newer colors and 17" or 18" wheels.
I want a 50s look. Even under the hood! lol Will see.
