I am gathering parts for a Powerflite to Torqueflite conversion for my 56 Dodge D500. I think that the air-cooled 57 Torqueflite would be the easiest choice for me. (I know the later ones might be better but they will be longer, heavier, etc. and open up more cans of worms).

Anybody? Or anybody with any leads on one?

Ended up buying Dave S's (finruskw's) 57 Windsor air-cooled TF. He didn't know if works or not but the price reflected that. Dave was kind enough to put it on a pallet, crate it and take it to Fastenal for shipping to Ferndale WA (the closest depot to me). I went down and picked it up today.

Here are some photos of the TF before, during and after crating. Now to get it out of the back of my Audi wagon (the TF weighs 165 lbs dry).

Next step (when the weather gets better will be to clean the outside).

Thanks again Dave.

Just curious as to how the fastenal shipping worked out for you ? If you don't mind saying how much did it cost to ship a 165 lb trans ?

The shipping was actually done by "3PL", 3rd Party Logisitcs, which is owned by Fastenal (apparently).

The shipping estimate was based on the size of the pallet, i.e. 43" x 43" x 18" and 250 lb, to be shipped from Manchester Iowa Fastenal to the Ferndale Washington Fastenal (the closest one to me). On that basis, the initial estimate was $269. However, there was some confusion about the "Rate Class" (??) and I was given a second estimate of $200. I am not sure which estimate was valid/invalid but I ended up paying the $200 (I pre-paid it over the phone to 3PL.) Once I paid it, they gave me the go ahead to contact my shipper (Dave S.) to tell him that they were ready to receive the pallet. Then I just waited for things to happen.

At the receiving end, Fastenal was very good. They brought the pallet out to my Audi wagon with a small fork lift and when it was determined that 43" would not go through the wagon's 41" opening, they helped me dismantle the crating and pallet. Then two of the young guys lifted the "hog" into the back of my wagon (onto the lid that Dave S. had on the crate). I strapped it down and drove it home.

At home, I got it out by pulling the wooden lid and "hog" out of the back of the wagon (backed into my garage) and onto my trusty but recently abused Black and Decker Work-mate (circa 1982). From there, a neighbour and I lifted it off the Work-mate and put it onto one of those cheap Harbour Freight type castered moving dollies so I can roll it around, i.e. outside the garage so I can start cleaning the external bits of the "hog". It's living at the very front of the garage for now.

Bottomline: I would definitely consider using Fastenal again to move heavy things. Not cheap but you gotta do what you gotta do.
