Hey guys, was just wondering if any of you have had to remove an instrument panel out of a 57 Dodge. I want to eventually replace the wiring harness. The wiring under the dash actually looks really good but the wiring in the engine compartment really needs to be changed badly. Already have had to replace the neutral safety switch wiring and a section of wire that runs behind the grill for lighting. Hopefully the entire dash doesn’t have to be removed to get the instrument panel out? If so, could I just replace all the engine compartment wiring and splice into the original dash wiring instead of replacing the entire Harness? Met up wth someone at Carlisle that has a 57 Plymouth that did it that way. The car only has an original 61,000 miles on it. I know that wouldn’t be the best way, but if the entire dash would have to be removed to get the instrument panel out, I would rather try to splice into the dash wiring. Also one more question, do they sell electronic ignition conversion kits for this car? And if so who sells the kits. It has a 325 Super Red Ram. The car still runs good with the points style ignition but it gets harder to change the points as I’m getting older. I’m only 55 years old but I can’t see myself doing this when I’m 60. I’d appreciate any information that you guys can offer. Thanks

You plan to remove the dash because the wires in the engine compartment are bad and even though the dash wires are still good after 52 years? Why? Just leave the dash harness alone and original. These are quality wires, unlike that what you can buy today. The wires behind my cars intrument panels (59,60,61) are still like new, except some of the newer ones that were added 30 years ago...

Can't help with the dash issue but I can help with the ignition. Pertronix will make a kit for your 325 poly. Check the link below:

https://pertronix.com/electronic-ignition-conversions-test?year=1957...

I would go with their coil at the same time and eliminate the ballast resistor.

Their coils: https://pertronix.com/canister_coils

I put one of their kits and their coils into my 56 Dodge D500 315 hemi and it's been great.

The speedometer comes out with just 4 or 6 screws, pulls out far enough to disconnect the speedometer cable, turn signal and illumination bulb sockets. Might give you enough room to do whatever it is you want to do.

Keep the original dash harness, as 1960fury suggested, if not damaged, keeping the color codes of the wires.  - SERGE -
