Glenn: As far as I know only some late run 56 Imperials and maybe New Yorkers got Torqueflites in the 1956 model year. They used a 1673 906 shifter box (same as used in the 57/58 D100 trucks with the Loadflite transmissions). I am using this box and associated 1705 370 face plate for my planned swap to a cast iron Torqueflite.

Based on research that I have done, I think that the 56 Dodges (and presumably the Desotos) were potentially being lined up for Torqueflites late in the model year run. For example, Per E. in Sweden has a 56 Dodge Golden Lancer Convertible that seems to have left the factory with a Torqueflite:

I have found no such evidence for 56 Plymouths. Based on their price point and the smaller engines (mostly 277s and some 303s in the Furys), I honestly doubt that the 56 Plymouths would been lined up for Torqueflites.

The 56 Plymouths (and Canadian Dodges) with Powerflites used a 1694 263 housing (the binnacle attached to the dash) and 1694 373 faceplate. (see below) (The American Dodge and Canadian Custom Royal housing was 1694 290)

That said, there was only one Powerflite shifter box across the 1956 Plymouth, Dodge, Desoto and Chrysler range, 1639 977.

This implies that the 1673 906 early Torqueflite shifter box might be able to be installed into a 56 Plymouth binnacle. As for faceplate, I think that you will have to make one because there is no "cheat" like I am able to do, i.e. the 1705 370 57-58 Dodge truck Loadflite five button shifter faceplate.

Hi Charlie

According to Dave Fogle, who posted in this string, the 56 Chrysler/Imperial and 57-58 D series truck LoadFlite pushbutton mechanism, part number 1673 906, is a possible fit for the Plymouth PowerFlite binnacle, to convert it to connect to a Torqueflite; for which I'd have to fabricate a faceplate, which I am willing to do..

Do you have a 56 Chrysler/Imperial or 57/58 D series Torqueflite 1673 906 pushbutton mechanism?

Anyway, if Charlie doesn't have a 1673 906, it looks like a 57 Plymouth shifter box is much the same. There are some on eBay.

I have heard but can not confirm that the 56 Powerflite RNDL buttons work in the early (late 56) Torqueflite shifters (L becomes "2" (or "1" (???)). Not sure if that is true for a 57 Plymouth Shifter box.

Thanks Dave!

The reason I'm considering replacing the Powerflite with a Torqueflite is to improve performance; I've added compression, a cam, enlarged intake valves, a high rise ("wind tunnel") manifold, spitfire headers, 2 1/2" dual exhaust, and a new Edelbrock 650 cfm carburetor. The performance is only marginally better than it was prevoiusly, when it was all stock. I'm told the extra gear in the TF will make a big difference.. do you agree?

Dave,
I took a picture of the inside of the 56 Plymouth shift pod and it looks like the shift mechanism mounts the same as the mechanism in the picture you posted earlier in this thread. It looks like the mounts are identical.
I know where I can find one, along with a cast iron Torqueflite, from a 57. It's worth a try; hopefully the performance gains will be worth the effort!

You will definitely feel the difference with a TF versus a PF. The PF is basically an automatic with only 2nd and 3rd gear, based on gear ratios (2.45 vs 1.67) the TF will put almost 50% more power to the pavement in first vs the PF.

Glen: You can remove the PF shifter box by removing those two nuts and sliding the box, with the shifter cable still attached, out the back. Installing the TF will be the reverse operation (after you swap the cable over).

I am told that the R,N and D buttons will work perfectly on the TF box. The L will work on one of the 1 or 2 positions on the TF box. So you will still be one button short unless you find a proper 57 or 58 D100 truck loadflite shifter box and/or buttons.

You will have to make your own shifter button plate somehow.

Jon: I'm really looking forward to this; I've invested a lot of time into this engine, and it ought to perform impressively.
Dave: I'm thinking of trying to adapt the buttons from the 57 TF box to a new plate that I'm going to make out of aluminum, so it'll look correct in the 56 housing.
I'm going to talk to a guy I know who may be able to do the plate on a CNC machine after creating a drawing based on the shape of the PF decorative plate, but with the openings to accommodate the 57 buttons. And, maybe a pattern like the original on the surface and a raised portion where the nameplate would normally go, for "TorquFlite" script.

Glenn: I would also make the new plate out of aluminum. I would use 1/8" plate (I buy stuff at either the Metal Supermarket in Burnaby or Canadian Tire (a big store) in their welding supplies area).

With careful planning (and execution) and drill, a metal-bladed jig saw and a Dremel with a grinding bit, you could make a flate plate yourself (without a CNC machine). Not sure about the texture. There might be metalized stick-on wall tiles that might have texture.

In the interim you could mock up the new plate with your old plate and a resized (to proper scale) version of the scan of the 57 Dodge D100 truck loadflite plate that I just did (attached). If you want a better quality scan, let me know via email.
