I really only know a bit about 56 Dodge IBM cards but I will take a stab at getting the replies started.

The car in question was scheduled to be build on Sept.30th, 1957 but it was actually built on Oct. 10, 1957 and shipped on Oct.19th (hard to see the 9). Your VIN number should start with LC3 and I see an LC3 01763? on the card and since it is not LC3L (= LA built), it was likely built in Detroit.

Engine number looks like it should be 58N (not sure about the N) 2584

"LOCATING ENGINE NUMBER
A boss is provided on all Cylinder Blocks on which the Engine Number is stamped. For 6 cylinder engines, this
is located on the left, side of the block at the front and below the cylinder head. For 8 cylinder engines it will be
found on top of cylinder block behind the water pump (except Plymouth P31 and LP2). On models P31 and LP2 it
will be found on front of block beneath left hand (drivers' side) cylinder head.
On the 1958 350 cu. in. and 360 cu. in. engines the engine number will be found stamped on a boss located on
the right hand side of the cylinder block beneath the distributor"

The engine should be a 392 hemi:

"The 1957 New Yorker had a powerful 392 cu in (6.4 L) Hemi V8 engine rated at 325 hp (242 kW). (In 1958) Forward Look remained intact but with new body-side trim, shrunken taillights and 345 hp (257 kW)"

The paint looks like HXX which should be an Aztec Turquoise roof and Ermine white lower and insert.

Thanks Dave & Phil. I think I finally figured out how to read the punches. the dealer code is 8181 which is Oliver Motor Co. in Columbia, South Carolina.

This is what I have figured out so far from the codes:

293 Sort Code
302 Power Brakes
303 Power Seats
333 Aerials - Dual Rear Antennae
345 Heater/Defroster
401 Left Side Mirror
441 Musicmaster Radio
467 Solex glass, Large Window
53-54,17 White Wall 9.00X14" Tires
551 Axle Ratio ???
578 30 Amp Generator
611 Drive ???
629 Tracer ???

Does anyone know what the Drive and Tracer lines indicate? How about the gear ratio?

611 = domestic (as opposed to 612 = Export).

I don't see 629 punched in your card.

Thanks. I was mixing up the 62X TRACER NO. punch with the TRACER 9 box in the upper right corner.

It's weird that they would associate the word "DRIVE" with whether it is a domestic sale or an export sale.

Not sure if this helps or not. I was just trying to correlate the punch card holes to the typing on the card. I think I found them all (except the pencilled in "5").

That's cool. I didn't know they put letters and characters on there like that. I'm just getting into these things as I have never bothered with them before. The 635 is the Route, so it makes sense that it might be penciled in as they wouldn't know how it was going to be shipped until later in the game.

I had my first encounter with IBM punch cards as an undergraduate in 1969 (50 years ago!!?), and I used them off and on until 1982 (in one of my Ph.D. classes). However, I had to review the punch card protocols today before I could figure out/remember how the letters were punched. So that was a bit of fun.

I hope that this helps you (Nathan) and anybody else looking for interpretation of IBM cards in the future. That said, the cards for the Detroit cars seem to be quite different than say the Los Angeles cars. Go figure.

Nathan: Don't get me wrong here, I am learning how to interpret the IBM card(s) as well. However, I don't necessarily agree 100% with what you have said. My comments and questions in bold below

293 Sort Code I think that the Sort Code is just "3". "29" is just the column number (1 through 80).

345 Heater/Defroster I see 345 as Air Conditioner/Heater
401 Left Side Mirror Agree, Left out side mirror
441 Musicmaster Radio Agree radio, not sure why Music Master. Is there a list somewhere?

53-54,17 White Wall 9.00X14" Tires ??
Maybe more like,
531 = White wall?
547 = 9.00 x 14"?

551 Axle Ratio ??? Agree Axel Ratio but which one?
