Why - what?

They were chrome flame arrestors and probably looked terrific when they were installed against all that bright red paint!

Looks like a great car to enjoy, wish I had the money and space for it. Shipped Aug 22, and with engine 486521 of 492995 (for all P31 and FP31 V8 engines). Based on that engine ID and shipping date, it was almost certainly one of the last '57 Furys built.

Or was it why is the glass fuel bowl upside-down?

Sorry. Yes. Why is the glass bowl of the fuel filter on top, not on the bottom?

I've seen them used this way. Messy to clean... Maybe to clear the heater hose?

Wow fancy having a starting bid of under $15K and not having it in a concours or original shape. Better email him.

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark.

$36000.

Whats your guess? 7 days to go. It is likely it will get pulled from auction too, the owner is probably feeling out the market.

Steve.

On a 1957 Plymouth, can someone tell me how to confirm if the engine is original? Anything else (besides the air cleaners) look to have been changed drastically from original? I know there are people here who know these cars way better than me and I appreciate your input.

The engine should be stamped beginning with "FP31xxxxx," but there is no way to confirm its originality unless you get the build sheet from FCA to verify it with. The motor could have been blown up back in the day and replaced with one found from another real 57 Fury that they made 7438 of. Back then it wouldn't have been quite so impossible to find a replacement. Just to be clear I am not saying this one has been replaced, there is only one way to tell and aside from the missing air cleaners and color this motor looks right. It's best to be sure with the documents from FCA to cross reference with though..

Thanks for the information. That stamp should be on a machined pad on the front of the block, driver’s side? Is there a good chance I’ll still be able to visualize that code with accessories attached? Also I’d assume there’s a date code cast into the block - driver’s side, side of the block? Casting date 2-12 weeks prior to the build date of the car? Just going off what I’ve found on other Mopars.

If the engine in the car is still the original one, that specific motor number "FP31 486521" will be stamped on the machined area just below the left cylinder head. This car looks "mostly original" to my eye. But the intake, block and heads don't seem to have any paint on them and the valve covers are painted red, when the original Fury FP-31 engine should have been silver with gold valve covers. The car is 100% certainly a real Fury, but I'd say it's 50/50 if that is the original engine it was built with.

Yes there are some casting / part numbers and date codes cast into engine blocks and other parts; in fact, there is even a shift code for when the foundry cast it! But those things are trivia, really. If the engine stamping matches the IBM card, then the correct engine is in the car - and if not, it's not the correct engine. My car's 392 Hemi block was cast 3/13/57 and the car was built 4/4/57 so your theory about casting date to manufacture is spot on!

For the same money I paid for my '59 DeSoto that needs absolutely nothing and looks like it just came off the assembly line, I'll gladly stay with what I have. But to each his own.

I'm surprised that the factory kept the old "log" exhaust manifolds on the 290hp top of the line Fury engine. I guess they're not so bad after all...?

I think there is at least 1 cloned '57 Fury. This one came out of LA.

Nice car, will not find an original 57 Fury like that. A 59 Desoto is a totally different car than a '57 Fury. Good price for it I think.
