Just arrived today at 8:30 AM from "oldwood" in Arkansas. Had the engine running by noon, still needs a gas tank and fuel lines. Then brake MC, rubber lines and cylinders. Also needs a rear driver leaf spring. Slant 6, 3 speed on the column. Neat car.

My dad helped my unload and get the car running, he's really in love with it. I certainly appreciate them more in person than I do in pictures. This one isn't in great condition, but it's really not that bad. All glass is good in this one, trunk is solid. Floor boards need help, but not the worst I've seen. Wiring has been hacked into, most likely when the newer slant 6 was dropped into the car. Has the 5 freeze plug block and "peanut" heads, but lifters still sound mechanical. That points to a mid to late 1970s motor I believe.

I'm glad the car made it into someones hands that will appreciate it.

I have found a gas tank and leaf springs for this car. Long term I plan to swap the 3 speed for a 1959 Borg Warner overdrive as I've read it's pretty straight forward to do. I've been going through my trans, actually in very good shape so I'm mostly cleaning and re-sealing.

I also have a set of Magnum 500 wheels with good, matching tires that I will put on this for a while. Need to get it driving and stopping safely, then it can come home and I can actually make progress on it.

So long term, this car will have a 318 over the slant six. The engine is a 1960 that came out of my other plymouth. I have 1959 and 1961 bellhousings and they are virtually identical other than the transmission bolt pattern and bearing retainer opening diameter, so I will use the 1959 bellhousing to "adapt" the overdrive to this car. Below are pictures of the bellhousings, '61 is on the left and the '59 on the right in all pictures.

Worked on the '61 this weekend. Put the tank in the car, new rubber fuel lines, fuel pump and filter. Cleaned out the fuel bowl and freed up the float. Starts and idles great, need to take care of a few vacuum leaks and I need the lock ring that keeps the fuel sender in the tank. Link to video of engine running below.

You don't even like /6's. Not everything has to be a V-8.

Lock ring has been added to the sending unit. Also did an oil change and corrected some wiring issues so the car starts, runs and shuts off using the ignition switch. Alternator is not charging, I will most likely upgrade to a Mopar square back unit with electronic voltage regulator as the wiring for the original is all hacked up under the hood as well. Need to clean wiring up under the hood in general.

Had a chance to get a little work done on the '61 today. Changed the alternator to a 60 amp Mopar square back unit and wired in an electronic voltage regulator. My buddy gave me a hand and he couldn't believe how simple it was to make the swap and update the regulator and wiring. Now I have 14.6 volts at idle, so one more issue checked off the list. Next time I work on it I will strip out the unneeded wiring and old volt regulator from under the hood, and the old starter solenoid.

Next step is installing my front disc brake setup from AAJ and reconnecting my vacuum advance. Getting close to a test drive!

My dad and I were back at this Plymouth on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Took care of the vacuum advance line, throttle is now pretty responsive but carb still needs a rebuild. Now that I've run it a few times, I appear to be leaking coolant from the heater core so that will have to come out at some point. We were able to mount the dual reservoir brake master cylinder, but I now need to shorten the factory pushrod to make it work properly. My new AAJ discs are now in place up front with all lines connected as well. The front driver brakes were missing (no shoes, no wheel cylinder) and there was a nail head cut off and jammed inside the end of the hard brake line on the sub frame, I have never come across anything like that before ever in all my experience working on cares.

I haven't touched the rear brakes yet, so next steps are rear wheel cylinders, rear rubber line and then make two new lines to connect the new MC to the front and rear brake lines. Then install my modified pushrod and bleed. Was really hoping to get this far by the end of the day Wednesday, but it's hard to work in a place that isn't yours and you don't have all your tools. Hopefully one more day, perhaps around Christmas, I can get the brakes finished.

Master cylinder is plumbed up. Rear passenger wheel cylinder has been replaced. Down to the rubber line on the rear axle, the rear driver wheel cylinder and another 2 feet of hard line I didn't feel good about so I'm going to replace as well. So close!

This car now has functioning brakes. Got really lucky with the weather today, close to 50 degrees in December is pretty great here. Nice firm pedal, car now starts, runs, drives and stops. Still needs some going through before being truly road worthy, but getting there!

Put my ratty seat from my 1960 Plymouth into this car over the weekend, mostly to get it off the floor of my garage and out of my way. Started the car for the first time since Christmas, can't believe how quickly it fired up.

My dad isn't sure which way he is going to take this car. Either it is getting his 440 or we're putting my 4 speed behind the slant 6. Either way, it's going to hang around.

Now that the 1960 Belvedere is out of the garage, this car is coming to my house to be torn down. If you need parts, let me know. My goal is to completely disassemble this car before Father's Day.
