I'm working on my buddy's 62 Dodge Custom 880. I put together a steel crank 400 to replace the tired 361. We've got a set of long rams that we want to try to use on this car.

My first question is this, Did the 62 Custom 880 have the long rams as an option? It seems to me they were available as maybe a D500 option.

If so, what were the colors, is the block supposed to turquoise?

It appears, from what I've seen, the long rams are as cast aluminum.

What color were the air cleaners? I see them often in gold or black but we're trying to make this look like factory correct original.

Lastly, and probably the more important question I have right now is, when using the long rams, did they use the standard intake gasket / valley pan? Or did they use max wedge intake gaskets and a valley plate?

I was going to order the paint colors and valley pan gasket but then I realized I didn't know for sure what the factory correct colors were and what intake gasket situation they used.

Any help would be more than greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

To my knowledge the only '62 full-sized car to have multiple carbs was the 413 in the Chrysler 300 and it was inline carbs.

Allpar stops talking about D500s at 1960. However, it does talk about long rams and 2 x 4bbls on the D500 361 and 383.

Nothing in the 1962 Dodge 880 brochure.

The "short" long ram induction setup was at least an paper option for the Automobile Manufacturers Association spec sheets for the 300H. It had 12:1 compression and was rated at 421 HP. I don't believe the '62 Polara line had anything of a high performance nature as Dodge was putting that effort in to the Ramcharger engines for the smaller Dart.

Ok, well thanks guys. We just, again, wanted to make it as close to "correct" looking as possible. The 361 was pretty tired and we had a 400 steel crank motor that would look identical to the 361 but have much more cubes. He's been looking for an excuse to use those long rams on something for years now. It may not be correct for that year. I suppose if that's the case we can color it however we like. I was thinking the block would be that turquoise color. I'll talk to him and see what he wants to do there. Anyone know if the intake gasket situation is the standard stock valley pan or if there was a plate system for that? I could do it either way I suppose but, again, we want it to look essentially stock. It'll sure sound healthier with 509 purpleshaft but it's not going like be fast or anything. More for show and tell.

Thanks again guys, this forum has a lot of good people that know what their talking about. A rare case these days!

To answer your question about gaskets, the long rams used the standard valley pan/gasket. Separate gaskets are available after market if you feel the need to use them. but not necessary.
