As per another thread, I am trying to create a new driveshaft for my A-433 torqueflite install project. I want to make it all look factory so I am trying to make the new driveshaft from the same sized parts that my existing driveshaft is composed of. (I DO NOT want to cut my existing driveshaft for this project).

REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=71100&...

As a result, I have been looking for a driveshaft with 4" diameter non-spring loaded front ball and trunion, a 3.25" tube and an "earred" Detroit Cross U-joint at the rear. (See photos below).

What I have been offered so far is a driveshaft with two (front and rear) 3.75" diameter spring loaded ball and trunion U-joints on a 3.5" diameter tube. Typically used on 6 cylinder and small V8 cars. That won't work for me, so I sent that back.

Today I received another set of driveshaft bits. The rear looked good, i.e. earred Detroit cross U joint. Unfortunately, the front ball and trunion housing is 4.25" in diameter and the driveshaft tubing is 3" in diameter. Yes that is correct, the largest ball and trunion has the smallest diameter driveshaft tubing.

In review:

Ball and Trunion.......Driveshaft......Trunion
Housing...................Tubing............Pin
Diameter..................Diameter........Diameter

3.75".........................3.5".............???
4.0"...........................3.25"...........0.625 (ish) inches
4.25".........................3.00"...........0.70 (ish) inches

That makes my head hurt.

I was a bit off on my flange sizes :

In 2018 I bought a New Old Stock 4" front trunion housing. This is the text from that ebay purchase. The same info also shows up in Section 16-04-0 of the 55-58 Mopar Parts catalogue.

"Offered is a NEW old stock Detroit D63...Mopar 1635099...front universal joint body fitting 1956 ONLY. Three size bodies were used in 1956. The flange sizes were 3 5/8"...4"...4 3/8". This is the 4" flange diameter body.

1956 applications include:

Plymouth Fury
Dodge D63-2 D63-3 D500
DeSoto S23 Firedome
Chrysler C71 Windsor"
