hi, trying to figure out how to remove the foot operated washer pump on my 55 dodge. the pad doesn't appear to have a allen head screw or clip holding it on. it has a slot cut into it which looks like someone took a hacksaw blade and sliced it, or maybe that's the way its supposed to be. my fsm does not have any info for this. any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Tony

Search the forum for a post by me 56D500boy regarding the 1253 491 washer pump. It has a photo of the pump showing the threaded shaft and the pump plunger. The threaded part uses two nuts, one on either side of the floor pan metal. The thinner plunger shaft has a groove which holds the spring clip that holds the rubber foot pedal to the plunger shaft. You might have to rotate/spin the pedal around to find the point where you can see the spring clip and remove it.

Once the pedal is off the shaft you'll be able to dig down and find the nut. Remove the nut and push the pump in to the lower engine bay area. Retreive it from under the car.

No biggy.

thanks for the input. I held the shaft with vise grips and turned the pedal until it twisted off. the metal spring clip was missing, that is what the slot was for. now for the daunting task of finding one. the one I have seems to pump ok, however the part where the hose attaches is broke. may have to fabricate something. thanks again!!!!

Tony: When I get back to NAmerica next week, I will try to help you further with this issue. In the meantime, email me a photo of your pump (I think you have my email address).
