Based on another thread, I found out (the hard way) that for 55-56 there were three different sizes of front ball and trunion front universal joint housings: 3.75", 4" and 4.25" (or by another source (an eBay advert), "the flange sizes were 3 5/8"...4"...4 3/8".

The smallest ones (3.75" (ish)) were typically used with the lower horsepower engines, either the 6 cylinder cars or the ones with the small V8 (e.g. Coronet V8 base). There were two ball and trunion U-joints on those cars, one at the front and one at the rear. Both of these small housing ball and trunion U-joints were spring loaded to allow for the centering - front/rear, of the drive shaft as the rear diff moved up and down with the road. The housing PN for the 55-56 6 cylinder cars was 1550 456. For the 55-56 Plymouth V8, Dodge D63-1 (Coronet small V8), and the 55 Desoto S22 and 55 Chrysler C67 (except Estate Wagons), the PN for the spring loaded housing was 1534 428. I've only seen either the 1550 456 or the 1534 428 housings so I don't really know the difference (if any). Both are small and spring loaded

The middle sized (4") housing had a PN of 1635 099 and was used by the 1956 Plymouth Fury, the 56 Dodge D63-2 (Royal 315 poly), 56 Dodge D63-3(Custom Royal 315 poly) and the D500 (315 hemi), and the 56 DeSoto S23 Firedome and the 56 Chrysler C71 Windsor. For these cars the rear U-joint was an "earred" cross-type that bolted to the pinion flange. All the slack and movement as taken up by the front ball and trunion.

This leaves the largest (4.25" or 4 3/8") housings. Its PN seems to be 1532 899 and in 55-56 was used by the Desoto S21, S22 and S24, and the Chrysler C67, C68, C69, C71 w/Power Pkg. and the C72, and all the wagons (which presumably were V8 (not sure about a 6 cyl Dodge or Plymouth wagon).

The 55-56 joint service package PN for the small housing ball and trunions, i.e. for the Front and Rear, of the D62, D63-1, All, S22, C67, except the wagon(s), was 1603 398. For the 4" housing, i.e. 56 P29 Fury, D63, S23 and C71, was 1643 287. For the biggest housing (for the S21, S24, S22, the Estate wagons, and the C67, C68, C69, and the C71 w/o Power Pkg. and the C72) the service package PN seems to be 1450 446. There are also some other PNs for the larger and more powerful Chryslers but I have no way to figure out what is what. See attached PN listings.

Interesting, as I was just going to post a thread requesting whether this will fit my 1960 Windsor

First thing you need to do is confirm that your existing flange is 4" in diameter. Otherwise, that looks like a good deal considering that it is everything needed (if it is the right size)

Useful information you are gathering. I was about to list a new old stock 4" body that I acquired from a defunct garage years ago in a Detroit Universal box. Your comments made me go and check under my 55 Plymouth Belvedere V8 wagon. I discovered that it has 4" spring loaded ball and trunnion joints both front and rear, identical to the one I picked up 30 years ago. So I will keep it as a spare. These bodies are quite stubby like the 3 5/8" universal bodies on my 38 Plymouth, a whisker longer at 3 1/8". There is a possibility that the tailshaft has been modified as my rear axle has been changed out for an Aussie Plymouth unit with tall ratio and smaller brakes, but it looks original.

I believe the 4" body that partners with the rear cross type would be longer than mine from pics I have seen, to provide more sliding adjustment. I have no idea what part number mine would be as all my Plymouth parts listings show only the 1534 428 for 55-56 V8.

Here are pics of the parts box , the body and the 55 unis

Previously, in a different (but related thread) I said:

Today I received another set of driveshaft bits. The rear looked good, i.e. earred Detroit cross U joint. Unfortunately, the front ball and trunion housing is 4.25" in diameter and the driveshaft tubing is 3" in diameter. Yes that is correct, the largest ball and trunion has the smallest diameter driveshaft tubing.

In review:

Ball and Trunion.......Driveshaft......Trunion
Housing...................Tubing............Pin
Diameter..................Diameter........Diameter

3.75".........................3.5".............???
4.0"...........................3.25"...........0.625 (ish) inches
4.25".........................3.00"...........0.70 (ish) inches

Recently, I have been trying to help Dieter in Schweitzerland with his front U-joint problem. This required that I clean up and measure a few things on the large B & T front U joint that I had gotten from Big M two years ago.

Turns out that the diameter of the flange is 4 3/8", not 4 1/4". This would make a difference at the eBrake drum at the end of the transmission. The tubing diameter is 3 1/16" not 3" even. The pin diameter is 0.700+/-0.005" so no change there.

I checked the PN of the B & T housings for the 1960 torqueflite cars (like Dieter's 60 Chrysler (300)) and it is 1739 920 just like it was for the 57-58 cars with Torqueflites. (The replacement ball and pin (roller bearings) PN is the same in 1960 and 57-58 as well, 1739 927.

Here is the 1960 PN listing followed by photos of this 4 3/8" B & T:
