All, I have my car at a local restoration shop for some repairs. I visited today while the car was on the lift. I was prepared to replace the ball and trunnion and the rear u joint since I believed them to be the culprit causing my occasional low speed drive train shudder. I had already replaced the transmission mount rubber and bushing. However, the front and rear u joint are solid as a rock. That said, I can grab the prop shaft and shake the entire motor and transmission. This is obviously the issue, but how much up and down play should be in the trans mount spring? It seems excessive to me and the mechanic who was going over it with me.

I’m happy that my joints are in decent shape. But irritated to find yet another gremlin to figure out.

There is a rubber bushing under the spring that tends to soften up and sometimes even cracked. You could change the rubber for a new fresh bushing (creative thinking needed) .
